In the realm of respiratory illnesses, there are conditions that often remain obscure despite their profound impact on individuals and their loved ones. Bronchiolitis Obliterans Organizing Pneumonia (BOOP), is one such condition that demands greater awareness and understanding. Today, I want to share the story of my mom, who has been dealing with BOOP for 30 years. Her indomitable spirit and want for a better life have led her to seek a lung transplant, a life-changing opportunity to embrace a breath of fresh air.

Understanding BOOP:
Bronchiolitis Obliterans Organizing Pneumonia is a rare and progressive inflammatory lung disorder that affects the small airways (bronchioles) and the surrounding lung tissue (alveoli). Despite its name, BOOP is distinct from bronchiolitis and should not be confused with it. The exact cause of BOOP remains unknown, and in many cases, it is classified as cryptogenic, meaning the origin is unclear. Growing up, I remember being told often that 9 of 10 cases were found on the autopsy table, so mom is lucky number 10.
