Kelvin Aumend and his wife, childhood sweetheart, Tara, moved from Northwest Ohio to Louisburg, North Carolina to be close to their daughter, Samantha, son-in-law, Charles, and most importantly, to play a bigger role in their toddler granddaughter, Phoebe’s life!
They moved or sold all they had accumulated since their marriage in 1983. Kelvin lost 90 pounds to try and become more active to keep up with their beautiful only granddaughter. He had not been feeling well for a while, but in March 2018 had tests done at Duke hospital after almost a year of no real answers to his declining activity levels and general well being. His diagnosis; Primary, Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. {Cirrhosis of the liver)Secondary; hepatopulmonary syndrome.
His treatment- Oxygen to breath, transplant for the diseased liver.
What should have been a time of joy and support for this family reunion has become a time of insecurity and struggle both emotionally for Tara and for Samantha as they struggle with all the health needs for Tara and for Kelvin. Tara recently underwent vascular surgery as well, and although back at work now, will be off again when Kelvin has his transplant.
Although his prognosis is good, with a successful transplant, their financial needs are great! From now till after transplant Kelvin requires a special diet { low salt, low fat) as many of us with special dietary needs know, these are not cheap!
They will need housing close to the hospital for 30 days, following the transplant for testing for rejection and success of the procedure, during which time Tara will be unable to work. With just moving and starting her job, there is no paid time off available. Tara will be Kelvin’s primary care giver until he is able to be up and about on his own following the surgery.
Although much of the cost for the surgery and testing is covered by their insurance, it is the daily needs that loom heavily over their heads as well as co-pays, medication, transportation and more. Please donate towards these needs so that their future with Phoebe can be bright as they prepare for this difficult chapter in their lives!
