On May 19, 2018 Eric was involved in a single car accident.

His family got the terrible call that something had happened to him 3 days later on May 22nd and we all rushed to WakeMed Hospital. The doctors still did not know if he was going to make it at that point. He broke both of his legs, many ribs, several vertebrae, and wrist, among other internal injuries. He also had a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the chest down. The day after the accident, the doctors also diagnosed him with a very rare brain injury called cerebral fat embolism syndrome, meaning the fatty marrow from his broken femur bones traveled through his blood stream and settled in his brain. The doctors indicated that his brain injury was catastrophic and he would never wake up. About two weeks later, he opened his eyes for the first time as he began to slowly come out of the coma. That was our first glimmer of hope! This is his story of proving all those who doubted him wrong, one step at a time!
