His family got the terrible call that something had happened to him 3 days later on May 22nd and we all rushed to WakeMed Hospital. The doctors still did not know if he was going to make it at that point. He broke both of his legs, many ribs, several vertebrae, and wrist, among other internal injuries. He also had a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed from the chest down. The day after the accident, the doctors also diagnosed him with a very rare brain injury called cerebral fat embolism syndrome, meaning the fatty marrow from his broken femur bones traveled through his blood stream and settled in his brain. The doctors indicated that his brain injury was catastrophic and he would never wake up. About two weeks later, he opened his eyes for the first time as he began to slowly come out of the coma. That was our first glimmer of hope! This is his story of proving all those who doubted him wrong, one step at a time!
Family and friends of Eric Carter are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with Catastrophic Injury.
Eric has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the GIVE button.
