James was diagnosed in January 2018 with ANCA vasculitis. This rare disease damaged his kidneys, and he was hospitalized for 10 days. He was on dialysis three times a week and was unable to work for several months. His kidneys seemed to improve for a while and then their function declined again due to the buildup of scar tissue. His kidney function slowly decreased until May 2020 when he was hospitalized again and put back on dialysis. He has recently taken time off from work again and begun training to do home hemodialysis five times a week. He is also currently awaiting a kidney transplant.

James is a high school social studies teacher with a wife, two young children, and three furbabies. He looks forward to regaining his energy to keep up with them all!
