One day I am teaching and the next day due to an undetected urinary tract infection causing me to lose consciousness, I fall hitting my head on the corner of the bathtub. At first the physicians notified my family that I may not survive, after two days in intensive care I was transferred to a hospital where I could begin therapy. The fall resulted in an incomplete tear of my spinal cord (C2-C3) resulting in paralysis from my neck downward.
After spending eight months in hospitals and skilled nursing centers, I returned home to continue outpatient therapy and hopes of restoring the ability to walk and use my hands. My goal is to develop the physical capacity to allow me to teach high school social studies classes online. i sorely miss the opportunity to interact with high school students and nurture their understanding of the social sciences.
I have been able to stand for 25 minutes in standing frames and with additional physical therapy , hope to begin walking with aid of parallel bars. With continuing hand therapy I am using more fingers on my right hand to accomplish tasks like eating and writing.
The expenses associated with a a spinal cord injury are extensive. First there are ongoing costs of medical care, therapy visits, medical supplies and medical equipment to facilitate my daily activities. However the largest expenses center around the 24/7 care-giving I currently require. The amount is $1400 a month.
With my wife in a nursing home suffering from Alzheimer’s, I could use your financial and /or prayer support to enable me to continue my therapy at home. To those who have given to my prior fundraiser, I sincerely thank you for your gift. Thank you for being my friend!
