Catherine is suffering from intestinal failure and is waiting for an intestine, stomach, duodenum, pancreas, and liver transplant in Cleveland, OH.
Just after birth, Catherine was diagnosed with Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction (CIPO), a rare gastrointestinal disorder characterized by vomiting, abdominal distention, pain, and weight loss. Having CIPO means Catherine’s intestines lack the ability to move food through the intestinal tract and she cannot rely on eating to survive. Instead, Catherine has been on Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN) her entire life – an intravenous (IV) formula received though a catheter connected to a vein in the heart administered for 8-10 hours a day.
Catherine has had many life-threatening complications as a result of her chronic illness and long-term TPN use. Now she needs a full multi-visceral transplant in order to live and to have a chance for a “normal” life.
Catherine is known for her “can’t tell me no” attitude. She pushes through life despite pain, sickness, and hospitalizations. Catherine achieved the unthinkable when she went away to college at age 18 and managed her infusions independently. Eventually she went on to Wake Forest School of Medicine and became a Physician Assistant.
Unfortunately, Catherine had to stop working as her health declined.
Family and friends of Catherine are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund medical expenses associated with transplantation. Donations will help her pay for TPN, medication co-payments, hospital bills, and costly anti-rejection medications required after the transplant.
Any donation you can make is greatly appreciated and will help so much in the long journey that lies ahead for Catherine. Please help us by sharing this link with any friends or family who may be interested in supporting.
Catherine has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility to the full extent allowed by law for contributors. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Give button.

Thank you for your support!
Catherine had her transplant on May 25, 2022. She had small intestine and partial colon. The past few months have been rough but she is improving daily. She is eating and doing tube feeds, now off of the Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN). She has a little ways to go toward full recovery but we are taking this one day at a time. Thank you to everyone that has been a part of this journey with us.
We are so happy to share that after 3 years of waiting Catherine FINALLY received the ultimate gift of an intestinal and partial colon transplant on 5/25/22! Catherine’s transplant journey started in Cleveland, OH where she was listed with the Cleveland Clinic for five organs. Eventually, Catherine was able to move back home to North Carolina where she was listed with Duke. After several assessments and discussions, the medical team decided Catherine could have a good outcome with an intestine and partial colon transplant only. This was amazing news.
Catherine is now 12 days post-transplant and her medical team is very pleased with her progress so far. She will remain inpatient at Duke for 1-3 months. While she is doing well, she has a long road of recovery ahead of her. Please continue to keep Catherine is your thoughts and prayers.
We want to thank everyone for donating to Help Hope Live to help Catherine pay for her medical expenses. Donations made continue to help so much as the cost for the much-needed transplant and medications are tremendously expensive.
Hello,
We know it has been a while since we posted an update, but we finally have some exciting news to share. For several months, Catherine was in the process of transferring from the transplant waiting list at Cleveland to Duke. There were several hurdles along the way – including delays because of COVID-19 – but she is finally on the transplant list through Duke! Catherine is so relieved to be home again and surrounded by family and friends she loves so much. She is also very eager to see what life will be like for her post-transplant.
We want to thank everyone for the continued support. Catherine feels so uplifted by everyone’s thoughts, prayers, and kind words.
Catherine and her family continue to be in awe at the outpouring of support from the community. The last couple of months have been especially encouraging with two successful fundraisers held in Catherine’s hometown, Lumberton, NC.
On September 14, 2019, Susan Oxendine with Runnin’ Fit, along with several supporters, hosted a “Run for the Catherine Gold” 5k. Susan did not know Catherine or the Gold family previously, but heard Catherine’s story and wanted to do something to help. Susan is now a great friend to the Gold family and we are so thankful for her. She checks on Catherine regularly and sends encouraging words when they are needed the most.
On October 24, 2019, River Run Art and the Robeson County Arts Council hosted the Gallery of Hope Art Exhibit and Sale to benefit Catherine. The co-chairs of the event were Nila Chamberlain and Joy McGugan, local artists, and Richard Monroe, vice and past president of the Robeson County History Museum. Works by North Carolina artists were sold at the event and profits were donated to Help Hope Live to help pay for Catherine’s medical expenses. This article was featured in the Robesonian prior to the event: https://www.robesonian.com/news/128929/art-showcast-to-aid-family-with-medical-bills
Both events were tremendously successful and Catherine is encouraged by all the support. Below are pictures from the Run for the Catherine Gold 5k and a photo of a special work from the Gallery of Hope fundraiser by Joy McGugan. Thank you to everyone!
A big thank you to Mike Aguirre for hosting a fundraising event at Big Daddy's Road House on June 1st. Mike is a good family friend and we really appreciate his effort and generosity. Check out the picture below of Catherine and her family with a banner from the event.
Catherine celebrated her birthday on May 5th along with a group of her close friends who traveled from North Carolina to surprise her! What a great surprise celebration with friends! Click on the photo album below to view a few pictures from the weekend.
Catherine's story was featured in her hometown’s local newspaper, the Robesonian. A very nice article! Click the link below to read:

It’s been less than 24 hours since we’ve shared the news about Catherine and already we’re overwhelmed by the kind words and support from so many. Catherine is getting settled into her temporary home in Cleveland and has already been to a few appointments with the transplant and infusion teams at the Cleveland Clinic. She is encouraged by your support. She likes to keep busy so soon she plans to explore the community for activities, classes, volunteer opportunities, etc. in order to keep her body and mind happy and healthy while waiting for the transplant. Stay tuned for updates!

Catherine, I’ve spent my 30 years as a painter, walking into Golds at least monthly to purchase supplies or get framing, I’ve developed a great friendship with your dad and have always known of his love for both girls but there was a twinkle in his eye when he would talk about his Catherine. I’m so excited that you have been given this opportunity to receive this operation. God bless you all and we are all so hopeful and I’m anxious to follow your journey. Love susie
