For two weeks I didn’t feel quite right and spent a lot of time in bed. I thought I just caught some virus because by the second week I had developed a dry cough. I have always tried to rest and let something like that run its course instead of always running to the doctor. This time it didn’t work. It was almost fatal.
On June 29, 2018 I had an appointment with my primary physician. I was feeling pretty bad by then. It was on a Friday, so he told me to go to the emergency room to have blood work done. After I arrived at the emergency room my life changed quickly. I was admitted into the hospital with a UTI (urinary tract infection) and sepsis.
The battle started for my life. The sepsis was attacking my kidneys. I spent five days in the hospital. The first few days the Nephrologist was doing some research trying to find out why my kidneys were failing. Most people that have kidney disease are diabetic or have high blood pressure. I am not a diabetic and my blood pressure always ran low. I never had any symptoms of a UTI. I was the rare exception to the rule. By July 2, 2018 I was diagnosed with End Stage Renal Disease. Before I left the hospital I was on dialysis. I am now on home hemodialysis four times a week.
I need a kidney transplant to survive. Fundraising through Help Hope Live will help me with the cost of the medication and other expenses both before and after the transplant. I’ve been told that anti-rejection medication can cost anywhere from $500 to $5,000 a month.
I’ve chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the GIVE button. Thank you to everyone who donated to Help Hope Live on Facebook on December 3. It gave me a good start towards my goal. Your thoughtfulness means alot to me. A special thanks goes to Barbara Mullin Dodds for helping me spread the word and the friends who shared my Help Hope Live post. I am really grateful that there is an organization that help people with major medical expenses that come with a transplant. End stage renal is so common, but yet most people don't know much about it unless someone in their family is affected. The medical cost are ongoing even after a transplant. Every little amount is important and appreciated.
