It started off fairly simple: Single father who worked hard all week and spent weekends with his son. It had been a few years with this routine and it all seemed pretty normal. Things were going well other than some slight exhaustion on the part of the father, but he preferred it that way so he could spend time with his little guy. Traveling to check out diggers, dumpers, dozers, dinos and new wonders every weekend.
The family always got together and made great memories these weekends and the boy’s light reached all he saw. This light carried the father through many tough times in his life.
Work was hectic and busy as the holidays were approaching and the father was feeling more and more worn down. He was starting to lose his appetite and feel nauseous in the mornings. He figured it was just a bug and would go away if he just kept working and stayed positive….. But he was mistaken.
Finally, the horrible feeling became too much for the father. He missed work and was forced to go to the doctor. There, he told the nurse about his problems and his history of problems. It was then that he had blood tests taken and received the bad news….. His kidneys were failing. Little did he know, his foreseeable future would not go as planned.
Although this short story sounds like something from a movie: improbable, depressing and life-changing, this is very real. And it happened to me. It has stopped my life to a grinding halt.
I could go on for hours about my trips to the hospital or my home dialysis treatments that left me mentally broken and exhausted, but all I will say is that this journey has taken me through terrible, trying places. I am holding on and fighting to stay as healthy and positive as I can, but I need your help.
I suffer from an auto-immune disease called IGA Nephropathy, which has caused my kidneys to shut down. I feel exhausted all the time and I also feel like a shadow of who I was before. I am on dialysis three days a week until I can get a transplant and put my life back together.
I have been on dialysis now for four years and my father has donated a kidney so that I can receive a live donor kidney. However, changes made to my Social Security have caused me to lose my Medicaid coverage which means that I have had to purchase a Medicare Supplement. My transplant team cannot activate me in the live kidney donor network that my father donated to until I have sufficient funds saved up to cover the costs for transportation and lodging for my stay in Seattle WA for my transplant as well as six months worth of Medicare Supplement payments. Additionally, my Medicare Supplement does not cover dental and my dentist has determined that I need to have a root canal performed before I can be made active on the kidney recipient list.
Hence, I urgently need help to raise the funds to help pay for my dental procedure and to build up adequate savings to allow me to get activated in the living donor kidney network so that I can get a live donor kidney transplant as soon as possible.
Then, with your help, I will be able to see what the future has in store for my son and our lives together. My son and I both are very grateful for any and all help and support.
Thank you,
Lafe
