Hello, my name is William Campbell. However, to my family and friends I am Bart. I am a 70 year old man and was a Gospel Preacher for the Church of Christ for almost 50 years. I started preaching when I was sixteen part-time. Then I attended Florida College where I studied Bible for four years. Upon graduating I started preaching full time and continued until I was 67 years old. My health situation required me to retire.
My journey to kidney failure started when I was around 65 years old. I had been a diabetic before this for approximately 25 years. While I was on vacation I thought I had a bug bite on my left foot. However, when I got home I went to the Emergency Room and discovered it was an abscess. They admitted me to the hospital and did surgery to drain the infection. Later when I went to my Endocrinologist he inspected my foot and felt it was in the bone. It turned out the infection was indeed in the bone so later that night I was again in surgery where they removed the two outside left metatarsal knuckles. Because it was in the bone they had to put me on six weeks of high-potency intravenous antibiotics. Four and a half weeks into this procedure my kidneys started to shut down.
My kidneys at this time were still functioning at approximately 20% but then I experienced a heart episode. I was fatigued all the time and one night my wife found me slumped over. They ended up having to put dye in my veins to see if there was a blockage. They knew this procedure would probable destroy my kidneys but they needed to see if there was a blockage. It turned out there were three arteries blocked and they put three stents in. This did destroy my kidneys. I am grateful I had the option to be put on dialysis knowing this isn’t an option for some. I have been on dialysis now since April 2017 and have recently been placed on the kidney transplant list.
I am doing this fundraiser to help me with the medical expenses Medicare and my insurance won’t cover. My wife and my income is strictly social security which necessitates us having to live with our son. We help his family out by taking care of our grandson while they are at work, relieving them of the costs of daycare. One of the medications I will have to take costs $3,000.00 per pill. I will have to take this medication for 30 days (3,000 x 30 = 90,000). Beside this there are other medication and costs I will need to cover.
Please donate to my fund to help me with these out of pocket costs that my Medicare and insurance won’t cover. If you are not in a position to donate, I would appreciate your prayers.
Family and friends of Bart Campbell are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with transplantation.
