In February of 2016, Paula Caravella was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, a progressive lung disease without a known cure and few treatment options. This vibrant 63 year-old mother, grandmother and wife is currently awaiting placement on the list to receive a life-saving double lung transplant at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Born in Bennington, Vermont, Paula leads an active life in North Attleboro, Massachusetts with her husband of 22 years, Peter at her side, and her two grown children and grandchildren nearby. Paula holds degrees in both Computer Information Systems from Bridgewater State and Social work from Boston College, and has worked as an Advanced Life Support EMT and a government contracts specialist.
While the cause of IPF is unknown, Paula has close relatives who have also battled this debilitating disease. With an incredible attitude, relentless determination and your support, Paula is eagerly awaiting the transplant that will allow her a long and healthy life with the people she loves.
All donations made through this non-profit organization are tax-deductible and will directly pay for medical and other expenses not covered by insurance.

I was officially put on the transplant list today. Now we wait for the call. Happy to be on the list. Scared about the surgery.
All of the tests are finally done. I have been informed by Mass General Hospital that they are putting me on the transplant list. I have an appointment with the transplant surgeon in 2 weeks. One more test is being ordered but it will have no impact as to my being listed. Thank you to all who have supported me on this journey.
Because I had an issue with titanium a few years ago and that is what they use to put your sternum back together, I have started the process to see exactly which metals I am allergic to. Everything else is moving along. 2 more visits to the allergy department this month. July I have 4 appointments. I have another CT ordered for Aug but am not sure if they will wait to make their decision on whether to put me on the list until that CT where they really are not too concerned about it.
I am now at the 3/4 mark of testing to determine if they are going to put me on the list. Just went through a cardio cath test which I came through with flying colors. My BMI is now down to 28.7 which is below their high point allowed. I have a few more tests to go through and a couple of meetings with various members of the team. Fingers crossed that all goes well.
Breathing is becoming more of an issue. My regular pulmonary doctor is talking about increasing my dosage for the meds I am on to try and stabilize the process of the fibrosis as not only do I get out of breath much easier but I am also having issues of bluing in my fingers and toes. All indicators that the blood flow there is not getting enough oxygen.
Thank you to all who are supporting me.
