Maple Syrup Urine Disease is an autosomal recessive metabolic disorder affecting branched-chain amino acids. The condition gets its name from the distinctive sweet odor of affected MSUD individuals when having an illness. His disease does not allow his body to break down and get rid of excess protein. Dustin drinks a special formula to help with other proteins his body needs and to give him the extra needed calories his body needs for times of crisis. He is on a very limited diet, no meats, dairy, wheat or even some vegetables that are high in protein. Dustin was placed on the liver transplant list July 1, 2019.
This transplant will change Dustin’s life forever and cure him of his disease. He will be able to eat a steak dinner, which most of us take for granted, which is a goal for him and his family. Dustin, as you can imagine, has been through so many hospitalizations, dehydration and brain swelling. This transplant will also allow him to care for his two children without worrying about a crisis with brain swelling.
Family and friends of Dustin Pierce are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with transplantation.
Dustin has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Give button.
