Lenny’s long battle with end-stage kidney disease has come to a critical point. After roughly nine years of dialysis, he needs a transplant to survive. We’re asking family and friends to join us in fundraising for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to help with critical expenses Lenny will face immediately after surgery, including the cost of lodging near the Virginia Mason transplant center in Seattle WA where he is required to stay for 4 to 6 weeks following his discharge.
Lenny has always lived a positive and productive life despite his chronic health condition. He has overcome many obstacles to achieving his dreams – from serving our country and graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy to a 13-year run as saxophonist for Grammy-winner Earl Klugh. Lenny has also contributed his talents as a music educator and performing arts activist to the various communities in which he’s lived. His positive attitude and lifestyle helped him avoid the inevitable for a long time. But now Lenny depends on dialysis and needs our help to get this life-saving procedure.
While Lenny has health insurance, many transplant expenses are surprisingly not covered, such as the monthly anti-rejection medication he needs to take for the life of his new kidney. Lenny has been told to anticipate upwards of $5,000 per month just for medications alone.
Donations to Help Hope Live can help ease the financial burden of a transplant and allow Lenny to focus on a healthy recovery and a long life ahead.

The most impactful 24 hours of my life started at 6:00 AM Pacific Time on July 28, 2021.
Today I'm celebrating one year since my last dialysis treatment and Day Zero of my rebirth! Please allow me to recount some highlights throughout the day...

The best part of celebrating 11 months with my kidney Kenny is all the wonderful memories that we've made together so far. #ForwardMotion
There hasn't been a single moment during the past 10 months that I have not been grateful for my kidney, Kenny aka Special K!

Day 275. My kidney Kenny and I have reached NINE months together as a team
#ForwardMotion #kidneytransplant #survivor #recovery #progress
Today marks 7 months since my kidney Kenny gave me a new lease on life! #ForwardMotion
Day 195. Back in Wenatchee for a post-transplant visit with nephrologist Jan Vetter. My kidney Kenny continues to perform like a rock star! Both the Virginia Mason and Confluence teams agreed to reduce medication doses of aspirin and Myfortic. They also eliminated amoxicillin-clavulanate (Augmentin) and Sulfamethoxazole-trimethoprim (Bactrim). Labs revealed decreased White Blood Cell (WBC) count indicating a possible disorder of the immune mechanism; the plan is to keep an eye on this problem. Overall, my status is excellent!

Day 184. Back in Seattle for my 6-month post-transplant checkup. Started the appointments by receiving a monoclonal antibody treatment with EVUSHELD for pre-exposure prophylaxis for prevention of COVID-19. Then came visits with nephrologist Andrew Weiss and pharmacist Katherine McManus. My kidney Kenny is doing very well. The plan is to play my sax for the team when I return in July for my 1-year anniversary!

Christmas came early this year... received the gift of a new kidney aka Kenny 5 months ago today! #ForwardMotion
Day 125. Today was indeed a very happy 60th birthday! Please accept my deepest thanks for the many messages of love and support. We reached another milestone... time to set new goals and press onward! #ForwardMotion #kidneytransplant #survivor #recovery #progress #livingmybestlife #blessed
For most people, today is just another day. But for me, it marks 4 months since my kidney transplant! #ForwardMotion
REACHED THE SECOND MAJOR MILESTONE TODAY: Three months since my kidney transplant! #ForwardMotion
Day 89. Monday morning marks the start of another week. The first thing on the docket is a walk to the grocery store across the street from my apartment for snacks and ingredients for a healthy, homemade lunch. Time to seize the day...

Day 83. Time for a visit to Sullivan Dental. Examination revealed mouth ulcers on gums. The most likely cause is a bacterial infection from biting the cheek and immunosuppression. Decided to postpone cleaning and recommended discontinuing use of Crest toothpaste and Scope mouthwash. Will reexamine on November 8 after adopting a new oral health regimen of flossing, brushing with 1.1% sodium fluoride prescription dental cream, and rinsing with warm salt water 30 min later. It is extremely important that good dental and mouth hygiene is practiced. Lucky for me that my dental team is aware of the special needs that transplant patients have!

Day 82. I know that most people hate Mondays. But for me, the start of each new week is an unbelievable gift... a chance to continue healing and get stronger. So, shopping and walking the aisles of my local supermarket are an important part of most days.

Reached the 10-week mark since my kidney transplant yesterday! The healing continues... #ForwardMotion
Day 47. Seemed like a good day to get reacquainted with an old friend. I've only opened my saxophone case once in the last 4 years... to play for my father's January 2019 homegoing. It was immediately obvious why my transplant team insisted that I wait to attempt to play a wind instrument -- my surgical incision still has a LOT of healing to do before I can practice in any meaningful way. So I played long tones for a few minutes and counted this as a win. It felt good to take the first step of my long journey to become a serious saxophonist again!

HIP HIP HOORAY! My kidney Kenny has been onboard 2 weeks today! #ForwardMotion
My kidney Kenny has been with me for a week now. Based on his performance so far, he's earned the nickname "Special K" #ForwardMotion
Today seems like a good day to drive to Seattle... I'M GETTING MY KIDNEY TRANSPLANT TOMORROW! #ForwardMotion
Cleared the crossmatch so I'm compatible. Will find out in the morning if one of the donor kidneys is mine. #ForwardMotion
Got the call at 7:05 AM to let me know that I'm #3 on the list for the latest kidney. It's crossmatch time again. #ForwardMotion
I'm fighting for a kidney transplant to show my gratitude for the ARMY of friends and family who love & support me! #ForwardMotion
9:00am Melissa of Virginia Mason called. The lab work came back and the transplant team has declined this kidney. The wait continues... #ForwardMotion
TRANSPLANT UPDATE: Scott of Virginia Mason called at 8:25pm to inform me that the surgical team was unable to book an operating room on Thursday evening as planned. They expect to remove the donor kidney sometime Friday morning. Then, they need to examine the organ and get results from a biopsy to make sure this generous gift is suitable for transplant. Waiting for the next call... #ForwardMotion
UPDATE: B & T cell crossmatch came back negative. I can accept the donor's kidney. Waiting for next call... #ForwardMotion
Virginia Mason called at 6:50 PM this evening. Will get the results of the crossmatch in the morning. #ForwardMotion
TRANSPLANT UPDATE: It's 2:30 AM and I just got the call... the team was unable to harvest kidneys from the latest donor. So, the search for MY kidney continues. Don't worry about the emotional rollercoaster, friends! I'm confident that God is in control and will carry me through to victory. Keep the faith -- I KNOW THAT I WILL! #ForwardMotion
I'm #3 in line for a kidney that's about to become available. They're going to crossmatch me just in case... #ForwardMotion
TRANSPLANT UPDATE: Shortly after Virginia Mason called they rang back to tell me that the donor's kidney tested positive for COVID-19. The team consulted with the CDC and determined that the risk was too high to proceed. So, we're waiting once again. I'm neither upset nor disappointed. I have put this in God's hands! My gift of life will arrive when He decides the time is right. #ForwardMotion
I'm happy to report that the caregiver problem has been resolved... on the ACTIVE list again! #ForwardMotion
My transplant status is back to INACTIVE due to a change that compromised my caregiver team. More news soon...
Now that I'm on the ACTIVE LIST waiting for "the call," I must send a blood sample every month. My dialysis unit will draw the blood samples. They are used to monitor the immune system for previously formed sensitivities. An individual may develop antibodies as a result of prior exposure to other human tissues, i.e. blood transfusions, surgeries, and vaccinations. If antibody levels are high, waiting time for a transplant will likely be longer compared to someone whose antibody level is lower.
IT'S OFFICIAL!!! I'm finally ACTIVE on the kidney transplant list! #ForwardMotion
Busy day... Finally got the crown for my missing front tooth. Also got the 1st dose of the Phizer vaccine! #ForwardMotion
Back in Seattle for Round 2 of my kidney transplant evaluation. Started with an ultrasound carotid doppler test. Then meetings with the financial coordinator, nurse coordinator, surgeon, and social worker. Finished up with transthoracic echo test. These should be the last hoops that I have to jump through. #ForwardMotion
I see you, friends... more than 400 of you responded to my transplant update last week. The best is yet to come. #ForwardMotion
Update Transplant Evaluations are scheduled for May 18 & 26 at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle! #ForwardMotion
Dentist made the cast for my crown today... Transplant team has put evaluation tests on the calendar for late May! #ForwardMotion
Completed phone screen with my transplant coordinator. Expecting a call to schedule my evaluation next week! #ForwardMotion
Just spoke with my transplant coordinator... the Surgeon & Medical Director will be discussing my case next week! #ForwardMotion
Met the goal to cover post-transplant insurance premiums last week! Deepest thanks to all who helped me clear this hurdle. On to the next challenges... #ForwardMotion
