Lavaun Heaster lives in Portland, Oregon, . She has lived with Type I diabetes since the age of 9 and has faced the challenge of managing her health responsibly for many years now. In spite of the fact that diabetes claimed much of her eyesight 15 years ago and now being on peritoneal dialysis, Lavaun leads a very active life. Social dancing and cooking for others are her great passions. Until recently, Lavaun worked as a fulltime social services professional—helping to improve health outcomes for diverse communities and individuals. Having found ways to stay positive while living with a chronic condition for so long made it easy for Lavaun to relate to other peoples needs. For many years now she has served her community as a volunteer serving worthy causes and those in need.
Now Lavaun herself is in need (of financial assistance) as she spent 2 years on dialysis and is convelesing from a kidney/pancreas transplant.
Currently Lavaun is receiving her medical care through the UCSF where the transplant was performed on Oct 24th with a second surgery for complications on Nov 12th.. After multiple surgeries and complications related to dialysis in the past year Lavaun has finally made it on to the the transplant but was unaware of how prone pancreases are to complications and is just trying to deal with the constant medication changes and concerns of the transplant team. The surgeons felt Lavaun was an excellent candidate because of her proactive attitude and good overall health and those characteristics have come in handy. Lavaun is raising money to pay for uninsured medical expenses associated with her kidney/pancreas transplant.

Thank you for your support!
As I approach 5 tears of living with my new now just part of the family kidney and pancreas things are moving along. I went back to work for awhile but things didn't work out because of other disability issues so I am working hard on starting an art business and serving on our local Commission on Disability.
One warning for everyone who has a transplant and everyone else also, WEAR your SUNSCREEN! I developed benign skin cancer on my eyelid but the anti rejection meds are slowing down the healing. I do wear sunscreen but never on my eyelids, maybe I need better sunglasses.
All in all stopping the progression of the type 1 diabetes and getting off dialysis has been well worth everything!
Hi Lavaun...My name is Craig Cushman and I can relate to you needing a transplant for both pancreas and kidney. If you get a chance maybe you could read my profile. I hope you are doing well if you have received your transplant and all is well....take care.
