Dear Friends and Family,
At the age of 17, I was diagnosed with Lupus. At the age of 19, my kidneys failed. My doctors placed me on a form of chemotherapy called cytoxin, and I regained 50% of my kidney function as a result. The Lupus went into remission. I did not have a lot of problems until April 2004. My kidneys failed and I was left with only 4% kidney function and was diagnosed with ESRD (End Stage Renal Disease). With ESRD I had to begin dialysis — and was told that the only chance I had at a normal healthy life would be to undergo a kidney transplant. This kidney failure was caused by the Lupus. In August 2004, I had three strokes in one same day. These strokes were also a result of the Lupus.
Even with my Medicare insurance the cost of a transplant is very expensive. Due to my pre-existing condition I am unable to obtain secondary insurance coverage. So in order to be placed on the active transplant list at Oregon Health and Science University Hospital, I need to have a plan to raise money to pay for the uninsured transplant-related expenses I will have to meet out-of-pocket. This is a task that I cannot meet alone — I need your help.
To help with some of these uninsured expenses, a fundraising campaign in my honor has been established with HelpHOPELive (formerly NTAF). HelpHOPELive is a nonprofit that has been assisting the transplant community with fundraising for more than 26 years. All contributions are tax-deductible and are administered by HelpHOPELive for transplant-related expenses only. Won’t you please consider making a contribution today? For more information, please contact HelpHOPELive at 800-642-8399.

Asking for help is never easy. I thank you in advance for your help and support at this difficult time.
