At the age of fourty I was diagnosed with COPD. I had no idea what that even meant. After several searches on the internet I came to understand just exactly what I would be facing long term. To say the least it was a grim outlook long term. Coming to understand what a chronic disease is was to say the least eye opening. I had three wonderful children and one beautiful grand daughter. I couldn’t have a chronic disease I felt healthy.
Yes I was a smoker. Starting at the age of 16. I was in no way shape or form even thinking about giving them up. They were that big of an addiction. Even knowing I was further damaging my lungs and inevitably speeding up the horrible effects to my lungs, I still continued to smoke.. As a few years went by I found myself purchasing over the counter inhalers when they banned those from the market, I wont lie I was scared. I had come to count on using them to breathe. I didn’t see a doctor regularly for lack of medical insurance.
Fast forward to Thanksgiving 2010. I had prepared a feast and had all my loved ones at my table it didn’t get any better then that. I was exhausted, so decided to take my precious five year old granddaughter, Olivia, and cuddle up in bed to watch Rudolph. That night at approximately 2:00 AM I was awakened with the most horrible pain in my right side right where my lung is. It was so bad I thought I was dying. I started to pray. I said lord, I love my life and I love this little girl laying beside me more than anything most especially a cigarette. If you help me lord not to lay here and die right beside her I will never put another cigarette in my mouth again. I did go to the emergency room that night and was diagnosed with severe pneumonia. It wasn’t easy but I kept my promise to my lord and to myself, and there begun my journey as a non smoker.
Sadly enough I had already done extensive damage to my lungs that was irreversible. I have waited tables all my life and loved doing so. I was put on oxygen in 2017 and had to give my waitressing days up. In the seven years between 2010 and 2017 I was blessed with another grand child a handsome young man named Jack. I found myself not being able to play with him nearly as much as id like to be able to. I now have a third grand baby another little boy named Charlie. I want to be able to run and play and do everything they ask nana to do.
The wonderful team at Duke Medical Center says my window is getting very close. I will have to re-locate to the Durham area for approx. 3-6 months for my transplant. While I do have medical insurance now, there are still so very many things that aren’t covered. I have been told to anticipate needing $18,000-$20,000. Any donations are greatly appreciated along with any prayers. Donations to Help Hope Live can help ease the financial burden of the double lung transplant and allow me to focus on a healthy recovery and a long life ahead with my family and to welcome many more grand babies.
My family and friends are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live in my honor (Janet Hubble) to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with transplantation.
I chose to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the GIVE button.
