After being diagnosed with COPD in 2004, Greg learned that he had Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency in May of 2018 after being hospitalized with double pneumonia. Since then we have been actively working with his medical team to manage the devastating effects of the disease including weekly in-home transfusions. The degree to which his lungs have been compromised became apparent when we received the results of his August Pulmonary Function Test, where we learned he had between 18-20% lung function.
On October 9 2019, we learned that Greg has less than 2 years to live without receiving a double lung transplant. His greatest wish is to be here with his family, sharing the empty nest life with Tawnya, playing golf with his buddies and being here when their boys begin families of their own and he finally gets to be a grandpa.
Greg is a lifelong resident and graduate of the Blue Ridge community having grown up on a farm outside of Mansfield and spending the last 23 years living in Bellflower with his wife Tawnya. They raised their two boys, Garrett and Jacob in Bellflower and Jacob recently bought his own home in our community while Garrett chose the big city!
Greg is an avid golfer and long time member/board member at Indian Springs Rec Association in Saybrook. Greg has continued to work up until this past week – at AHW – (John Deere dealership) as an assistant parts manager. He loves to watch the Illini and
Chicago Bears while hanging out with the neighbors in the local Packer Palace or Scholl’s garage.
Greg and Tawnya will be traveling to Chicago frequently for testing and appointments pre-transplant. The initial pre-transplant testing week (December 8 – 13th) will incur approximately $1,200 in out-of-pocket, personal cost for lodging, parking, etc. They will make at least one more trip to Chicago in December and on-going trips as needed up to the lung transplant itself. Upon receiving his new lungs, Greg will be in the hospital anywhere from 2 weeks to 6 months and post-transplant he and Tawnya will need to relocate to Chicago for a minimum of 3 months.
Your donation will not only help with these living and relocation expenses but also help pay for Greg’s uncovered insurance premiums, co-pays for appointments and the cost for his post-transplant medications. (He will be on approximately 15 different medications
post-transplant.)
They feel incredibly blessed and grateful to have amazing insurance and yet the financial consequence of transplant is daunting. If you know Greg, you know this is not his comfort zone and yet your support allows us to focus on doing everything we can to make the transplant process successful!

We are under self-isolation. Last Wednesday we had the opportunity to meet virtually with Dr. Ison, Infectious Disease at Northwestern Medical and he provided a deep dive into the Covid-19 virus. Each day as information has come available we have heard from the transplant team.
Greg is no longer receiving his Alpha-1 infusions due to the risk of his home nurse inadvertently passing the virus. She happens to be an ER nurse in one of our local hospitals and as we have all learned, our healthcare providers are at high risk of exposure. The infusions help maintain his current function. We know that a loss of function is probable and the duration of being off the infusions ultimately impacts him.
The local hospital where Greg goes for his Pulmonary Rehab twice a week was also cancelled yesterday due to the growing threat in our local area. The rehab is again used to maintain his function so that he is in the best possible shape for transplant. The good news is that there are exercises and things he can do at home to work on his cardio.
The transplant team has assured us that they are absolutely moving towards transplant with everyone on the list and the virus does not impact their ability to do their job. It simply is a waiting game. Obviously given the current state of things, I would have to imagine that if we were to get the call in the next couple of weeks, we would be limited to who can be at the hospital with us.
Thank you to everyone who continues to support our family! We could not do this without each and every one of you!
We are selling t-shirts to help fund Greg’s double lung transplant! Lots of fun styles to get you in the mood for spring.
It’s official! Greg received the call yesterday afternoon and he has been added to the Lung Transplant List. We are anxious and if we are completely honest, more than a little bit scared. Our phones are on 24/7 and we have prepared the best we can. It is unnerving to realize that another family must deal with the loss of their loved one in order for ours to have a fighting chance at a longer, healthier life. The responsibility that comes with this gift is at the forefront of our thoughts.
The team at Northwestern is amazing and we have 100% confidence in their skill and ability to navigate all of the ups and downs related to the process. There are a lot of unknowns from the obvious – availability and timing – to potential post-surgical complications, infections, and re-hospitalization.
Please keep us in your thoughts and know we will keep you updated on the progress!
We spent the day at Northwestern starting with a Pulmonary appointment and ending with the Patient Forum. Dr. Tomic updated Greg’s records and will be refiguring his Lung Allocation Score (LAS) due to his increased oxygen use and the upper respiratory infection he has had since returning home on December 13th. He also had Greg do another chest X-ray and EKG today to make sure the bronchitis was cleaning and that his heart function was the same. Whenever you have pulmonary disease it significantly stresses the heart muscle.
We have also been advised going forward that if Greg must go to our local doctor, urgent care or ER, that the Lung Transplant Team be consulted. They will determine course of care. If at all possible they would like us to come to Chicago. Greg’s lung function is so compromised that we need transplant specialists involved who are going to be more urgent in their response. Greg will also begin taking an antibiotic by mouth 3 days per week as a preventative measure. It may not stop a full blown infection ie pneumonia, bronchitis but it should keep him from having to be hospitalized.
Our afternoon was spent at the patient forum where there is a full spectrum of attendees. Those like Greg in the listing stage, patients post transplant and caregivers. We had several post transplant patients today and one gave Greg the biggest smile. He saw Greg’s Titleist hat and told him he too was a golfer and was 4 weeks post-transplant. The team told him he would likely be able to swing a golf club in 3 months! We also learned a lot about the things that are typically encountered once they were released from the hospital. There is just so much to learn and manage from the caregiver side. Many described the need to have systems in place for communication, medicine dosing and changes, lab days, etc.
All in all Greg is doing ok and we are trying to find a new normal. We have had multiple calls with our insurance companies (health and disability), the transplant team, our and our local pulmonary team. Our go bag is ready and we have our phone tree set so that we don’t have to worry when the time comes.
Thank you, thank you, thank you to each of you for sharing Greg’s story, donating, calling, texting and showing up. We could not do this without our village.
-Tawnya
Last Wednesday we met with Dr. Bharat, the thoracic surgeon, and his team to discuss the specifics of the surgery. Dr. Bharat has confirmed that Greg will have better survival odds with a double lung transplant. There is a 7% difference in the 5 year survival rate. However, if the perfect single lung becomes available, he would give Greg that option as well.
On Friday morning (December 21st), the team confirmed that Greg will be put on the transplant list upon final approval from our insurance company. Given the holidays we are still waiting for that call!
Greg, unfortunately, has been sick since returning from Northwestern on the 13th. He started his second round of antibiotics today and a chest x-ray confirmed bronchitis. He is doing his best to rest! Fingers crossed this round of meds does the trick and it doesn’t get worse.
We will update as soon as we are officially listed.
We are home from Chicago and very happy to be here. Greg is not feeling well, running a slight temp and waiting on our team to call us back.
The heart Cath went well and there are no major blockages to be concerned with. His pressures on the right and left side were in line with someone with advanced lung disease. The lung perfusion tests showed that there was equal damage to both lungs. We are still awaiting the results of his Pulmonary Function Test, Bone Density, and all of the blood work (30 vials worth!!!!).
