Xuan was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, a systemic autoimmune disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs, in 2001. She had to resign from her work to look after her health. She always has an optimistic attitude and always tried to look happy and strong and not be a burden to her family. Xuan spent her time raising her daughter and volunteering at her daughter’s elementary school until 2006. Her health took a turn for the worst and her kidneys went into renal failure. She had to start dialysis treatments in order to maintain her life.
Dialysis was not a way of life Xuan was happy with because she was missing out on living life to the fullest, so she started to look into kidney transplantation. After looking at a few centers in different cities, news of new kidney transplant center was set to be opened in 2017 in Pensacola, FL . Xuan was hopeful to receive a kidney in her own city, which would save her on travel expenses for her and her caregiver. She was put on active status of the waiting list January 2019. After almost one year of being on the Sacred Heart Hospital list, she was luckily called in during Thanksgiving weekend to have her kidney transplant. Xuan received a kidney transplant on December 1, 2019 in her hometown of Pensacola, FL!
Organ transplantation is a life-long commitment. Many transplant expenses are not covered by insurance such as the anti-rejection medications needed for the life of the new transplanted kidney. Anti-rejection medications are critical in maintaining the transplanted organ an can cost from $1,500-$1,800 per month.
Donations to Help Hope Live can ease the financial burden of a kidney transplant and allow Xuan to focus on a healthy recovery and a long life ahead with friends and family.
Xuan has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Thank you for your support!
It has been 2 months since the kidney transplant. The incision is healing nicely according to the Dr. There is still some fluid leaking from the incision but Dr. said it is normal while healing. I can now drive on my own to the hospital twice a week to see the Dr. and do bloodwork. Labs have been great so far! Anti-rejection medications are doing their job by keeping my body from rejecting the new kidney. Some nausea/vomiting/diarrhea from the medication every now and then but overall I think I am doing GREAT! Next step is trying to be more active and get in some kind of exercise.
Xuan received a kidney from a donor on December 1, 2019. Her recovery is going well with a few initial problems from the surgery. After one month following the surgery, her body has stabilized and is getting used to the new kidney.
