I never thought at the age of 46 I would need a heart transplant. I have chosen to partner with the nonprofit Help Hope Live Foundation, to help fund-raise for my out of pocket expenses that will go along with receiving my transplant. This includes helping to pay for my caregivers, whom have had to quit their jobs to care for me on a daily basis & will have to continue to support me in the future. In addition to supporting my caregivers, I will also need assistance for food, lodging and transportation, Co-pays, Prescription costs, Rehabilitation, and keeping my home in La Junta where my wife still resides, while I am required to stay in Denver.
Even before my diagnosis, I struggled physically, to work to support myself and my wife, Melissa. Not being able to work to provide financial support to myself and my wife, has taken an emotional toll on my health and mental well being, as well as our day to day finances. In the wake of the physical limitations that keep me from being able to work, our living expenses fall on my wife’s shoulders, to pay for, solely from her income alone. We struggle to keep up. And with mounting medical expenses, and being apart, in 2 separate cities, her ability to take time away from work to be with me in Denver, is impossible due to the fact that we would loose our home and fall further behind financially. Being apart for long periods of time is heart breaking for both of us. And being the sole income provider is stressful for my wife.
I’ve always been the kind of person, who would give you the shirt off my back if you needed it more than I did. For many years, I mainly volunteered to teach others, also with fixed or low incomes, to do their own home repairs, etc. Giving back to my community when I was barely physically able to do for myself by teaching others to do for themselves, when they couldn’t afford to hire a handyman, or a contractor. This has given me a sense of self worth in a situation where I have little to no control over my worsening health condition.
It took years to get a correct diagnosis, due to the other complications and symptoms of my Type 1 Diabetes. And it has taken a physical toll on my body. During my initial 3 day work up at UCHealth in Denver, for my Bridge to Transplant LVAD (Left ventricular Assist Device) Surgery, my health had become critical and I was immediately admitted to the hospital, for what would turn out to be emergency LVAD surgery.
In the 8 weeks that I have been recovering from the Surgery, my situation has once again became critical, and I have been admitted due to a large blood clot that is dangerously close to my pump. In the mean time, I am waiting for a heart to become available. Myself, my wife, and my family are all praying that this is a short wait. But it also saddens me to think that someone will lose their own loved one, in order for me to stay alive through a Heart transplant.
Donations to Help Hope Live will assist me with providing financial relief to my caregivers & help with other medical items not covered by my insurance. My wife works tirelessly to pay our bills at home in La Junta, barely making ends meet while I am in Denver waiting for my Heart transplant. My sister quit her job to be my full time care giver in Denver, so I was eligible for the LVAD surgery, and now the Heart Transplant surgery. The financial burden Chronic Heart failure brings, not only affects myself and my wife, it takes a toll on the family that has generously offered to help where they can, as well.
You can help by making a donation to my campaign page. I will be forever grateful for any amount donated as you will be helping me prolong my life, both financially & emotionally. Thank you so very much. With love, Jeff.
P.S. Jeff’s wife Melissa, his sister/caretaker Cassandra, her husband D.J., (with whom Jeff is staying with in Denver, when he is not in the hospital) and his parents Robert and Judy, and extended family send love and gratitude for those of you that are gracious enough to help raise funds! We all Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your generous donations!

1.31.20 Jeff ended up in the hospital after his first post Echo Cardiogram. At 8 weeks post surgery, they found a dangerous blood clot, the size of a dime. It was too close to his heart/pump, near his Inflow Canula. Thankfully the Cardio team was able to put him on a regimen that dissipated the clot. His medications have changed, poor guy has to give himself shots twice a day to keep his blood thinned out to a therapeutic level. The Warfarin was not working properly.
I got to bring him home yesterday. A week in the hospital can take a toll on a patients mental well being. It's helpful to be with family and those that love you. We are all thankful that he can come home to wait for a new heart and that he doesn't have to stay in the hospital indefinitely.
Please consider donating to help him take care of expenses. $5, $10, $20. It all adds up. No amount is too little.
Thank you!
