Family and friends of Dave Sumpter have established this fundraising campaign in Dave’s honor to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with his kidney transplant.
Dave was officially diagnosed with end-stage renal failure in May 2014 and started dialysis immediately. After almost 6 years of 3-4 days a week on dialysis, he was recently blessed with approval to the Kidney Transplant List at the Mayo Clinic Hospital in Phoenix. While the journey has felt like a roller-coaster ride for all of us, with the approval from the Mayo Hospital it introduces the high possibility of him attaining a kidney transplant quickly. In the words of his surgeon “be ready to receive the call any day and no longer than 6 months.”
This is thrilling news, yet kidney transplants are expensive. The transplant will require a 2-month recovery stay near the hospital in Phoenix, 700+ miles away from home. To make the kidney transplant a reality he will need to raise $13,000 to cover vital medical bills, anti-rejection medication, travel, and temporary relocation expenses.
We have chosen to partner with Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised. All donations are managed entirely by the nonprofit, and funds raised will be used to cover medical costs via Help Hope Live’s Southwest Transplant Fund. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Give button.
Check-out the pictures for a glimpse into our lives with Dave in the varied roles he plays in each of our lives; father, son, brother, uncle, Assist Pastor, and friend to the old and young alike.
Please know that any contribution helps. On behalf of Dave, we thank you in advance for your kind considerations.
Dave (and Crystal, Mariah, and Amihra) Sumpter, Monica A(sister), Kyle J(nephew) and many friends and family.

April 2, 2020: The world might be in a state of uncertainty, fear, and even missing TP yet, life in Phoenix has been getting better every day. There have been great days and good days. Our most significant need right now is the N95 mask. Transplant patient takes a substantial amount of immunosuppressants to avoid rejection. An everyday cold for anyone else could become life-threatening for a transplant patient.
It has been six weeks since Dave's transplant, and he is doing fantastic. While the kidney he accepted was "high-risk," it is performing wonderfully. Kidneys can be considered "high-risk" for many reasons, including developing an underline disease from the donor.
Dave is one of those recipients who has developed another disease from his new kidney. This disease is curable with an 8-week treatment. The treatment includes eight weeks of a specialty drug, which costs a little under $28,000 for the eight week supply. Although extremely expensive, we are excited there is a clear answer.
On a positive note, the kidney itself is now up to 61% function. When Dave's kidneys failed in 2014, he was at >15 % function. All of his labs look great and show significant evidence the kidney is working. He stopped dialysis completely and healing very well.
We hope to be home soon. Although this means more isolation due to the Shelter in Place, it will be wonderful to see our family. One free from the dialysis machine and freedom to have a cold glass of water on a hot day!!!!
Thank you, everyone, who has helped so far. We appreciate all the prayers, encouraging words, looking out for our family back home...and please consider Dave when you want to ignore the Shelter in Place order.
Please remember all donations are tax-deductible and managed by Help Hope Live.
Thank you, everyone, for your support. Dave's new kidney has started working and he is up to 52% kidney function in the new kidney. Overall, he is doing great with just one bump in the road and a trip to the ER related to the incision. However, after a minor procedure, things are well.
We have a minimum of a few more weeks in Phoenix and only $3,000 from his goal.
UPDATE UPDATE!!! We received the call yesterday from the Mayo Hospital in Phoenix. They have a kidney for Dave. We fly out today and I am actively looking for temporary housing for the mandatory 6-week stay after surgery. Thank you for everyone who has donated, so far.
