As you are aware by now…my cousin Lisa Hill (daughter of Patti Brooks) had a serious accident on January 18, 2010. She fell forty feet from her apartment balcony and sustained a broken neck. As of now she is a quadriplegic. She spent 30 plus days in the trauma ICU at the Med in Memphis where she underwent spinal surgery to stabilize her injury. Lisa then went to The Shepherd Center in Atlanta, GA (one of the top re-hab centers in the Nation) where she had 60 days of intensive rehabilitation and a second spinal surgery.
In September 2010 Lisa was moved into a LTC facility (long term care) while awaiting an opening in another well known re-hab facility. On January 11, 2011 she was transferred to the Tennessee Re-hab Center in Smyrna, TN (near Nashville) to continue and under-go very aggressive and major therapy in hopes of recovering as much mobility as possible from her injury. When Lisa was released from this facility in May 2011 our family was struggling to find a facility that had an opening to accept her as well as accommodate and meet her required needs.
Our family has discovered that there is a short-fall for housing for non-elderly disabled persons such as Lisa. At the time of Lisa’s accident she was 41. She is the mother of Mackenzie and Chase.
The past years have been very rough for her. She has been transferred to several different facilities. Because she requires so much care most of these places do not have the proper staffing to accommodate her needs on a continual basis.
Our society has made no provisions for someone in Lisa’s situation and our family is searching for alternatives as opposed to living in a nursing home with the elderly. There is a huge hole and gap for adults in other age brackets that nursing home facilities can not meet!
We can rescue pets, whales, wildlife and trees yet somehow backs are turned and our society has blind folders and no knowledge re info for humans that fall within the capacity of this need. If anyone has any contacts or ideas to help regarding this matter…please know they are welcomed.
We are trying to exhaust every avenue and looking for “divine” connections and advocates to take a stand and forge forward along side us to help generate housing for and to encourage and improve the lifestyles of all handicapped individuals.
Thus far through determination, hard work, dedicated medical professionals and the prayers, love and support of family and friends Lisa has made some progress. Although Lisa is confined to bed and a power chair, she continually strives to resume some of her pre-injury activities.
Although Lisa’s insurance covered basic medical expenses, she faces a tremendous financial burden with uninsured expenses now and over the coming years. Fees for rehabilitation, health care, and doctor’s visits are very high. A pre-owned modified van for her to ride in cost around $40,000 and the other expenses associated with her injury continue to mount. For instance- her power chair malfunctions and repairs are out of pocket expenses for the family.
To help with the out of pocket costs of these uninsured medical expenses, recovery-based therapies and equipment a fundraising campaign has been established in Lisa’s honor with Help Hope Live. Help Hope Live is a nonprofit that has been assisting the transplant and spinal cord injury community for over 30 years. Won’t you please consider helping Lisa realize her dream of a more active life by contributing to her Help Hope Live fundraising campaign?
Remember every donation of any amount is both greatly appreciated and tax deductible to the full extent of the law!!! All donations are administered for medical expenses only.
To share this page with others in your community who might wish to learn about Lisa’s campaign and join us in our fight for non-elderly handicapped individuals please see the “Share My Page” options on the top right side of this page.
THANK YOU for your love, care and support!
Sincerely,
Gary Hardin
