DAN NEEDS OUR HELP!

My life was thrown into an upheaval when I was diagnosed with Hepatocellular carcinoma and End Stage Liver Failure. In additional to other complicating health problems, a liver transplant is my only hope for survival. I have good insurance but there are gaps that need to be paid out of pocket. Even with insurance a unit of blood is $500 and I’ve had 9 since Oct. 2019. Trips to the ER aren’t cheap either, three since Oct. 2019.
Thank you for any donations. – Dan Reading

Dan, the father of two boys, Ben and Matt and his wife Nancy are long term community members of the Draper and South Jordan Utah area. As a family and as individuals they have been deeply involved with church and school activities at the Skaggs Catholic Center. Dan is a long time 4th degree Knight of Columbus, serving as former District Deputy. For years he has help to organize and volunteer for many knight sponsored events including promotion of youth sports such as basketball and soccer, Blue Masses in recognition of first responders , and fundraisers for charity such as past Festival of Roses events and the Lenten Fish Fry. Nancy is frequently spotted at events and often taking the lead for activities like the St. John’s Women’s Group, Salt Lake Deanery, Boy Scouts and other local and diocesan wide event. Her hospitality offered to others is always gracious and enthusiastic.

After three different times of nerve racking calls from the University of Utah Transplant Team, Dan’s turn for a transplant arrived. He checked into admitting at noon on November 13. At 11:00 pm that night, Dan was taken to surgery. Family and friends kept vigil, praying and waiting for words of encouragement.

At exactly 3 am, Benjamin, Dan’s son, sent me the following text:

“Update from the OR nurse. They have removed his liver and are beginning to put the new one in. He is stable and doing well.”

After hours of anxiously waiting, we learned surgery was over, and he was doing alright. In fact, Dan was on his feet later that day. It is a wonder to think how this liver transplant will offer Dan a chance at the future. Right now, he has pain to overcome as his wound heals. Dan will be closely monitored by the transplant team and is now on a regiment of anti-rejection drugs. On this day of Thanksgiving, I will trust God to send my prayers of gratitude to the family of the unknown donor.

The hospital bills are beginning to be churned out, as well as the schedule for frequent checkup and lab work. If you are interested in supporting Dan’s recovery, you might consider a donation to his medical fund, in his name, Dan Reading through Help, Hope and Live. https://helphopelive.org, a non-profit organization, uses donated money to fund unmet medical cost and expenses related to the cost for organ transplants and catastrophic illnesses.

You're in our prayers Dan! Hang in there, praying that St. Anthony finds you a good liver and St. Martin dePorres helps to heal you. May God Bless and care for you, Nancy and your boys.
