On March 27, 2019, our son Oke a college accounting student was coming home from a day of classes when a car struck him crossing the street in front of his house.
He was rushed to the hospital where he was diagnosed with a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). A portion of his skull was removed to allow the brain space to swell. No other bones where broken. After weeks in the ICU, Oke was transported to a rehab facility where he continues to work daily to regain function and mobility. While Oke can now follow commands, move a little and feed himself with assistance, Oke’s long-term prognosis is neurologically after 1 year in the hospital and still progressing he will continue to progress but physical progress remains unclear.
Oke was a very fit guy the doctors said that is the only reason he is still alive. Despite the physical challenges he now faces, Oke is demonstrating he is a fighter working out as much as he can in his hospital bed all day and night. Oke is the 4th of 5 brothers, the quietest of all with a passion for chess and video games.
As you can imagine, the cost of Oke’s care and recovery are extreme. Even with insurance, we are facing many out-of-pocket expenses, such as home and vehicle modifications to accommodate Oke’s wheelchair, ongoing rehabilitation therapy, and full-time home health care. As we prepare to bring Oke home, we need your support now more than ever.
Donations to Help Hope Live can help ease the financial burden we’re facing as a family and give Oke the chance to live his life as fully as possible.
Family and friends of Okechukwu Iloabanafor are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with Catastrophic Injury.
Okechukwu has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Thank you for your support!
For Halloween Oke was superman and he really is a super-man, he was able to withstand a speeding Jeep hitting him with no broken bones just some scratches and a traumatic brain injury that is life changing. Oke can now speak but ONLY out of pain, and only words like "yes," "ouch," and "no." He has retained his capability to read and count which is amazing.
