Nola is a kind, caring mom of three and Nana to 10 grandchildren that adore her. After numerous bouts of pneumonia and irreversible damage, Nola’s lungs no longer function. She is now living in Durham, NC as a patient of Duke Hospital’s Lung Transplant Center. Soon she will be listed on the National Donor Registry, ready to receive her new lungs.
She has many things on her “To Do” list that she cannot wait to check off. Most people take these adventures for granted, like walking on the beach, shopping in town or going to a golf tournament. The most important would be getting on an airplane to see her son, daughter-in-law, and their family. Without a lung transplant, she cannot visit them. The amount of oxygen required to simply walk prohibits her from flying. It may not be until Covid-19 is over that she can really work on that list, but she now has something to look forward to.
Even though it feels like it should be downhill from here, the hard part begins once she gets the call. She has been living with her brother and caregiver, Karl in Durham for the last three weeks finishing Pre-hab to be listed. Unfortunately, insurance does not pay for the time she and Karl live in Durham prior to and after the surgery. Every expense, from rent, to gas, to food, it must come from the generosity of others. It could be days or months that she must stay within a few miles of the hospital, ready to go when the phone rings.
While we are ecstatic that this transplant will give Nana the opportunity to see her grandbabies grow, this also means a family will lose a loved one. Please say a prayer of thanks to the person who made the choice to be an organ donor and a prayer of comfort to the family that must grieve their loss.

Nola is still living in Durham and waiting to be listed. Hoping to hear something any day now! She has graduated pre-hab, but is still continuing to attend rehab in order to stay strong while waiting for surgery. Thank you to everyone who has offered thoughts and prayers! They are appreciated and needed every day!
Nola is doing great with Pre-hab and will hopefully be listed within the week. While this is exciting news for us, this means a family will lose a loved one. Please say a prayer of thanks to person who made to choice to be an organ donor and a prayer of comfort to the family that has to grieve their loss.
