On June 23, 2020 my father, Shefqet Kupi suffered a massive hemorrhagic stroke. After a long day of work, he had come home and suffered the stroke. My younger brother found him on the floor, barely responsive and in a lot of pain. My father was rushed to Valley Hospital, by the time he had arrived at the hospital he was unresponsive. The doctors did not provide any hope of recovery and were preparing us for the worst outcome.
My father spent around a month in the ICU where he was in a coma. After a month of being the ICU he was moved to the neurology floor at Valley Hospital. He spent an additional month in the neurology floor still unconscious. In early August, he was transported to Kessler Rehabilitation. Within two weeks of being at the rehabilitation center, he started to regain consciousness. He is becoming a bit more alert as the days go by but has not regained function or mobility. As he started to show minor improvement, we were made aware that insurance would no longer cover his stay at the rehabilitation center.
We were provided with one choice by insurance and that was to move my dad to a nursing home where insurance would only cover his stay for a month. If we decided to move him to a nursing home, we would not be able to visit him because he would have needed to quarantine for two weeks. In order to minimize any further suffering for my father we decided the best route would be to bring him home.
My father was your typical eastern European family man. He cared and worked hard to provide for his family. He spent the majority of his life working in construction. This was something that he loved doing and could always be found on his days off fixing things around the home or helping friends fix items around their homes. He loved soccer as well as dogs. Seeing him in the state that he is currently in has caused my family to go through severe trauma. We are determined and hopeful that he will improve and live a full and productive life.
As you can imagine, the cost of my father’s care and recovery are extreme. With the minimum support that we are currently receiving from insurance, we are facing many out of pocket expenses, such as ongoing rehabilitation therapy, full-time health care, and home and vehicle modifications to accommodate my father’s wheelchair. As we prepare to bring my father home, we are desperate for your support more than ever.
