Larry Dean was born November 4, 2008 at 32 weeks gestation. He was born
with Prune Belly Syndrome (Eagle-Barrett Syndrome) and End Stage Renal Disease.
Larry remained in the hospital after birth for over 3 months and had multiple
surgeries during that time period. He was released from the hospital and sent home
on peritoneal dialysis. He was also placed on the waiting list for a kidney transplant.
After over 5 years of his mom, aunts, and home health workers doing his dialysis at
home, his mom got the call in April 2014 to get to the hospital for his kidney
transplant!
Larry is preparing to undergo yet another surgery in April 2021, but this one
is on his spine. On top of all of his other medical issues, he has an 80% curvature of
his spine that is putting severe pressure on his lungs and causing issues with his
breathing and his body’s oxygen level. The doctors are hopeful that this surgery will
help him to breathe easier as well as to recover from his surgeries and anesthesia
quicker.
Larry has been wheelchair bound since birth, and will remain in a wheelchair
for his entire life. While other children can go outside to run, play tag, go to the park,
swim, or even just go for a simple walk, Larry can’t. Larry can only sit and watch or
have someone push him to be somewhat involved.
Larry’s family has been told on numerous occasions that even on someone’s
worst day, Larry’s smile has cheered them up and brightened up their day. He has a
sweet, innocent, bright outlook on everything. The only time he is ever unhappy is
when he is sick. Larry has never been able to experience life like a normal child, but
the opportunity to go for a drive or go anywhere with his family is difficult with such
poor vehicle mobility.
Larry continues to be a bright star on all of the hearts that he encounters, so
to have the chance to brighten his day with a simple drive or with the chance to go
out of town to the zoo, aquarium, or anywhere that is not the hospital or another
doctor appointment would be amazing for him. Any help that could be provided towards giving Larry safe, reliablevehicular mobility would be eternally appreciated by not only Larry, but also by his entire family.
In closing, we ask that you look at yourselves, your children, grandchildren,
nieces, nephews, or even neighbor children and ask yourself what you would give to
allow a child to have even a part of their mobile normalcy and please help us to offer
some of that to Larry.
