She needs a lung transplant. So for that reason, we are asking family and friends to join us in fundraising for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to assist in paying the exorbitant expenses Claudia and her family will face before and after surgery. These expenses include the cost to relocate to where the transplant center is, lodging near the transplant center, and the cost of daily living as she is required to stay before transplant while she waits for lungs and for at least a year post surgery as she deals with the possibility and challenges of organ rejection.
This disease has unfortunately plagued four generations of her family. Those that recently have succumbed to the disease have included her mother (45 years old when diagnosed), uncle (35 years old when diagnosed), auntie (42 years old when diagnosed ) and a cousin (37 years old when diagnosed). Each of them only lived one year after their diagnoses. The grief that Claudia experienced after the death of her aunt who passed away in 2005 sparked a significant amount of fear and sadness because her aunt made it as far as being placed on the transplant wait list, but she died before her opportunity came to pass. Claudia’s fear of being next has been a consistent looming thought, and then in 2009 at the age of twenty-eight, she was diagnosed. At that point in her life, she was establishing herself as a wife and mother with young children ages six and eight. Reckoning with the possibility she may also have, only years to live, is the story. This is Claudia’s daily reality.
She has fought hard to stay healthy and beat the odds that have claimed the lives of her other family members. The love and support of her family (especially her children) and medical staff have given her the inspiration to live in spite of her chronic health condition. Because of this love and support, she has never let her health challenges get in the way of continuing to fight. Claudia is a very happy, enthusiastic person, with a tremendous and contagious sense of humor who always smiles, even through her tears.
Claudia currently needs oxygen to assist her breathing and doctors have shared that she is in the window of opportunity for a transplant. So there is a sense of urgency to help her to get the transplant because no one knows when that window will close. The hope is that the disease doesn’t progress so fast that it puts her at risk of losing the opportunity. Claudia’s wish is that she gets to continue to celebrate future Christmas with her children, other family members and close friends.
