James was an active man until 2011. He went to seminary in New Orleans, was a caring teacher, and also worked with teens recovering from addiction. An unfortunate series of events would change James’s life forever.
James injured his knee, which although painful, is somewhat ordinary. He was going to physical therapy for his injured knee, which is also typical. What happened next was a horrible accident with life altering consequences for James.
When James was entering the physical rehabilitation room, his crutch caught on a table leg and James fell headfirst into the workout equipment and was knocked out. When he came to, James could not feel his legs. James spent two weeks at UAB for treatment but never regained the use of his legs.
James and his wife Amy, who has CP and is in a wheelchair herself, have faced many difficulties over the years. In 2017 then again in 2019 their home was completely destroyed by fire.
Fast forward to 2020 when James’s 15 year old accessible van gave out on him. James and his wife have been homebound with no way to travel outside of their own homes independently. They are fundraising to purchase accessible transportation to be able to do things you may take for granted. They must rely on help to have food brought to them. They cannot get themselves to doctor appointments.
These are basic independence and quality of life needs that an accessible vehicle could solve for them. Please help James and his wife reach their goal of gaining independence back!
