My son Joseph was diagnosed with IPF (idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis), a rare lung disease on March 30, 2020. When speaking to the specialist at UC San Diego, he gave Joseph two years to live as he only has 20% of his lungs functioning. Joseph has dealt with many setbacks in his 21 years of life. With wearing hearing aids and his hearing declining every year, at 16 he became deaf. With the help of technology, he now gets to hear again with cochlear implants.

Joseph brings so much energy when entering a room. He has the biggest heart and smile. This disease has taken all that from him. He can’t laugh or talk without stopping to catch his breath. He has lost most of his appetite and with his weight declining, he will have to get a G-Tube placed. Joseph is fighting this disease with all he’s got. It’s hard to do daily life when you can not breathe.
