On October 4, 2020, I experienced a C6 spinal cord injury that left me paralyzed from the chest down. The car I was riding in rolled over on a remote gravel road in eastern Oregon, completely dislocating my C6 – C7 vertebrae, slipping my C5 facet, and damaging my ventricular artery. My lungs were bruised due to the impact of the seatbelt. I have lost use of my legs and fingers, and am regaining slight use of my left tricep and shoulder. I have been in a rehabilitation facility at Craig Hospital in Colorado since I was discharged from the ICU, and expect to return to my parents’ home in Portland early in 2021.
I plan to continue physical and occupational therapy once I return to Portland, and eventually I plan to return to my home in Bend, OR. I will require extensive care and support over the coming years, care that I will be physically incapable of performing on my own, like bathing, cooking, basic hygiene, and driving. I will require wheelchairs appropriate for short- and long-distance travel, as well as modifications to vehicles and houses to support wheelchair mobility.
As I regain functionality and a sense of normalcy in my life, I welcome any and all donations, recommendations, and assistance my community has to offer. You have all shown me so much support and I am extremely grateful. Your encouragement thus far means the world to me.
Thank you,
Jack Hogan
