I am a full time power wheelchair user due to a neuromuscular condition that developed in 1999 and resulted in paralysis. Prior to that I had been very active in supporting the 4H program in my county as a club President and dog trainer, volunteering at a church food pantry and active in my Church youth and sign language departments. I am a widow since 2009 and my husband used to drive me where I needed to go. I have an aide or friend who helps me but it is difficult for me to physically transfer to a car using a manual wheelchair and then have to depend on someone to push me in the manual chair . The power wheelchair protects my muscles and allows me independence but I need a wheelchair van to transport it when I leave the house in order to not need to rely on a caregiver to push me.
I have a great care team and have been blessed to have a dedicated and prayerful nurse, caregiver, friend, physical therapist and doctors that have helped me push through and work to recover some upper body function after 5 setbacks with total paralysis, I am now able to transfer to my wheelchair, drive a mobility van with special controls and do more for myself. . Donations to this campaign will allow me to have independence to not always have rely on someone to drive me to store, medical appointments, attend prayer, attend church, go to the food pantry, etc. and just do basic day to day things for myself.
I don’t feel like I’m special but I am blessed. I volunteered with the 4H dog training program with special classes to teach youth to train dogs for persons with disabilities. My dedication to the program was such that many years ago when bedbound, the youth, parents and kids met in my dining room and I trained from my bed when we were able to have club meetings in our homes. My last 2 service dogs have received their basic training though the 4H program. Because I am disabled and know the struggles to obtain services, I try to help others by directing them to resources to obtain equipment or services they need, including our church food pantry outreach. I receive so much love and help from people, When I can, I want to be a blessing to others.
Donations made to Help Hope Live in my honor will help purchase a newer van so I can remain independent and continue in ministry. My current vehicle that I drive is a ’98 Chevy Express van with a power lift and power doors and which needs a new rear bumper, front grill, running board on the left side. It is rusted and is held on by duct tape. The lift needs $1,000 worth of work and it recently stopped running and is currently in the shop.
A new van will allow me to mentor the youth learning to train service dogs for someone with a disability, go to the food pantry/store, church, prayer and continue to minister to others through the disability ministry, be more independent and do more for myself.

I personally know Tonya and she needs reliable transportation. No one is more deserving. She has a heart of gold and gives so much of herself to her community and church. I’m blessed to have her as a friend.
