Hello! My name is Ilton DePina. I live in Brockton,Massachusetts..I am 42 years old and I came from Praia, Cape Verde about 15 years ago. As an infant I was diagnosed with Polio. I have never been able to walk, hence since childhood I have been wheelchair-bound. I do thank God however that I have the use of both my arms. As an adult, I have been able to live independently. I am able to take care of myself and cook my own meals. I am able to drive and therefore can go shopping and visit with family and friends. My greatest gift in this world are my three beautiful children, Josiany, Jaylen and Jayson. They live with their mom but do visit and stay with me every other weekend.
One blessing of my independency is my ability to drive. However, this task has become increasingly burdensome over the past several years. In order for me to get into my small compact car I must crawl from my wheelchair into the back seat and then lift the wheelchair into the car. At that point I am able to crawl into the front seat and then get ready to drive. This lifting of the wheelchair has now caused irreparable damage to my arms. My elbows are severely out of joint and the pain indeed increases each time I lift the wheelchair.
A van to replace my small car is very much needed. It will help my mobility and also help me maintain my independence. I do cherish this gift of independence God has given me. A more practical method of getting around will greatly help me in this journey. As I have very little income, I am seeking funds to help me purchase a van.
