Kyler was born July 19th, 2020. While hospitalized at Golisano’s Children Hospital the team of doctors noticed he was having multiple seizures. He was prescribed three seizure medications and was still having 30+ seizures daily. They were transferred to Nicklaus Children’s hospital, where he was intubated immediately. While hospitalized there he did not have any seizures but was having a hard time breathing and feeding since he was on three strong seizure medications with multiple side effects. They were told that Kyler had a condition called hemimegalencephaly. They were told that he would need a surgery called hemispherotomy which involves removing a small area of the brain and disconnecting the right hemisphere to eliminate the seizures. And that he also has hemiplegic cerebral palsy on his left side.
Developmentally, Kyler is around 5 months old. He is not able to sit up on his own, roll over, walk, talk but he is always happy even with 10+ seizures daily.
This surgery will allow Kyler to live a seizure free life and hopefully reduce some of his medications. Surgery is the first step to his recovery. After surgery, he will need to have multiple therapies.
Kyler has a wonderful team of doctors advocating for him John Hopkins All Children’s Hospital. However, this specialized care does come at an added cost for Natalie and Dan, who currently live in Ft Myers which is about a 2 hour drive. With only the best as an option for their Kyler, they continue to travel to and from for hospital visits and will need to continue this post- surgery.
Kyler has to see many specialists such as:
· Occupational Therapist
· Physical Therapist
· Speech (Feeding Therapy)
· ENT
· Ophthalmologist
· Endocrinologist
· Cardiologist
No parent should have to worry about the financial stress while dealing with this. Our hope is that we can take some of the financial burden off of their family so they can focus solely on taking care of their precious baby boy. They need our help more than ever.
That’s where we can help make a difference! Please give what you can and spread the word. Your donations will help the Schmidt family. Thank you so much for your LOVE and SUPPORT! Whether it’s a monetary contribution, one of prayer…or both…THANK YOU!
Kyler has been seizure free since a few weeks after surgery. Always smiling and cooing. He is more engaged in playing with his toys. He is enjoying going to PPEC (pediatric extensive care) two days a week.
Kyler is very alert. Looking around and smiling more. He is also starting to hold his sippy cup and eating more solid foods. Loves teething cookies. And his stitches are healing good! We are making progress. Thank you for all your support and prayers they are working!
Kyler has been seizure free since surgery. He is smiling more and had his first official belly laugh. We are working with all his therapists and he continues to improve with his feedings.
Update: Kyler again proved the WHOLE team wrong and after Nuero surgeons agreed with his abilities, all it took was DR QUINN the Medicine woman to also agree he is something else and she sat me down as if she was going to say he’s staying(she knew I would flip because of good results), but instead she admitted we were right and they see we are on top of this more than most people are, then mentioned the process of Discharge immediately because she seen numbers were not being recorded at correct times from their teams on different floors which lead to unnecessary changes. His original discharge was set for Tuesday. I am still happy with our hospital choice because they were the most professional (mistakes happen all the time from what I see). I am also still thankful for all the medical workers out there for helping heal the world. He was sent home earlier but I honestly wanted to drive 2hrs back home right away to see Kalina(my daughter) instead of posting. We are all home finally as a family and sleeping on regular hours again. Lol Much Love and Thank You All for keeping up with Kylers progress.
Awesome Update: Kyler got his scalp tube removed which means I finally got to pick him up and today his feeding went well besides him thinking he’s funny blocking his mouth lol. Doctors are happy with his daily improvements. As soon as he drinks a bottle so we can remove that yellow tube we are Peace Out!! The brain is a magical thing just as is the love this little fighter has, thank you everyone for the hearts you have, no better friends and family than what I have been surround by since a little boy, thank you for passing it onto him.
