Thank you for your support!
I received transplant on APRIL 12th!!! I was the recipient of both a pancreas and a kidney. All was successful. I had some minor complications shortly after transplant occurred. There was bleeding at the bottom of the p0ancreas which most times heals and stops on its own. But after careful consideration the surgical team decided to go in for a second abdominal surgery to see if they could tell where it was coming from and repair it and stop it surgically. That was successful as well. I went home but was not keeping anything down. The transplant team thought it was due to my gastroparesis and allowed me to be discharged as long as I stayed hydrated and ate small amounts. After being home for a day and a half I had to go back to the ER at UW-Madison where they decided to keep me and do further testing to be sure it was not related to transplant. Labs continued to look good so they thought there was some stricture relating to the gall bladder. After a lot of imaging and more further testing all came back normal. After being in the hospital until the 23rd, I went home the second time on the 30th. So it was a LONG journey but I am so happy that I went through with it. I give all the credit to my fiance who made all the trips back and forth to and from home to Madison and Madison to home and took me to the ER after working a full day (early morning hours) and donating plasma and driving all the way there after such a long day. He ended up sleeping in the car as the ER was busy and they didn't have a room for me until early morning hours. We arrived there around 7-7:30 p.m. I also give so much credit to all of my family and friends that have reached out and gave their love and support and continue to check in on me.
Since then, I have recently graduated college with an Associate Degree in Early Childhood Education. I graduated with a 4.0 GPA, receiving 3 Presidential Honors (one for the 4.0 and two others I was awarded from my instructor.) I couldn't have done this without the support of my family, Lakeshore Technical College, and my friends. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you for helping me get to where I am. I couldn't have done it alone!
I am number 4 on the list now. That kinda sucks. But at least there is someone out there that gets one extra day to be with their family yet. They are doing transplants but nothing has come up for kidney/pancreas. They are allowing one person to be with me during transplant. I wouldn't get a call anyway since I am now INACTIVE due to an insurance issue. Let's talk insurance...UGH....GRRRR!!!!!
Since starting dialysis, I had to enroll in a Medicare Part D Prescription Plan. This was not something I was informed of or updated about when starting dialysis. Now, it is almost too late. I have until Thursday (2 days) to get enrolled in a plan and have the proper paperwork and go through the process! Some meds are covered, some aren't, some you have to enroll in yet ANOTHER prescription plan to get them covered and save hundreds of dollars a month. WHY IN THE HELL DOES THIS HAVE TO BE SO DIFFICULT?! I am beyond frustrated right now! I need this prescription coverage in order to be active on the list. So figuring this all out is my goal for the next couple of days.
We just had to utilize my savings for a new car. So nearly everything that could be used for a disaster like this is no longer available. My car's subframe rusted to the point of there being hardly anything there to hold it all together. So it wasn't really a choice.
On the upside of things, I get to go to see Shinedown, I am graduating in May, and I am enjoying both jobs. I have missed playing with my mini best friend. She can read and has the spunk and attitude of a teen! But that is what makes it fun.
Until next time, HAPPY SPRING!
Organ donations have been very few and far between. Due to COVID numbers increasing at the hospital, there are going to be no family members allowed in the hospital with me at this time. The good news is that we have technology for me to still have a support network while receiving medical care/transplantation. Also, the other good news is that they ARE still doing transplants at this time. Hospital board met and decided to still proceed. Number of COVID cases even inpatient are extremely high. However, this was information from maybe a month ago. Let's keep praying that there will be something soon!
In the meantime, I have started my last semester of college and started a new job as executive assistant at a new and upcoming Childhood Education and Care Facility. I am also looking forward to getting back to my play time with my mini best friend that has graduated the program that I was working with her on. So proud of her, the work I do and my strong ability to continually fight this battle.
I have started dialysis just before Christmas and have gotten my energy back for the most part. I have also been active in my volunteering with the Jaycees and with Student Leadership Board and Phi Theta Kappa at my college. I am an officer now for PTK as we try to recruit more members. I received awards at the Jaycees Banquet for my volunteerism in community topics and events.
I sometimes do not know how or where I get the time and energy to still be doing all that I do, but it's a part of who I am. I love making a difference. I thank those in my life for the continued love and support! Keep it coming! AND let's get these funds raised!
Well, I was hoping by the time I write this that I would have actually had the transplant. I got all the way as far as the operating room and had spoken to the anesthesiologist. The surgeon came in a few minutes later only to tell me that the pancreas was not a good organ and they could not perform the surgery. Because I was a duo transplant patient, the kidney went through a different allotment for someone on the kidney-only transplant list. I pray that they were able to have a successful transplant. I am waiting each day now for a phone call. The surgeon said she was getting a lot of phone calls regarding organ donation and that she wouldn't be surprised if she saw me back within a week or two. Well it has been a few weeks now and nothing yet. I hope and pray that I get a call before Christmas or shortly after. That would be a great Christmas gift.
It's transplant time! I am here at UW-Madison waiting for transplant scheduled for tomorrow morning. I am feeling an entire mix of emotions right now. Wish me the best of luck. I am going to need it!
I had surgery for the catheter for the start of dialysis on Friday. It is a Thursday as I type this and I have to say as exhausted as I am, I am still standing proud and getting complimented about being strong and determined. I have taken a medical leave from work recently, but it was needed. I still am part of my school's Phi Theta Kappa and Sheboygan Leadership Board and volunteer with the Sheboygan Jaycees. I recently fell in love with another organization in the community that I will be looking into helping as well. I have that on top of going to school full time and home life. I want to make a difference. Whether that be by myself or with a group, what is important is the time and effort put in to an event or fundraiser or whatever project it may be. I LOVE to know that I am part of the reason that someone is smiling today. It is not hard. Help and volunteer when you can. It will change you as a person.
My gfr (kidney function) is an 8%!! I am overly exhausted, trying to fight to stay awake in the afternoons. I have been getting sick each day upon waking up and my body hurts all over! I have met with the surgeon for the dialysis. We are going to get the surgery done on the 29th. I may have 2 "ports" put in. One emergency one and the other for the dialysis at home. This is hopefully going to be a bridge until the transplant. Prayers please!
I had a urinalysis done for one of two medical facilities that I am working with on transplant. However, they found that there was white and red blood cells indicating a rare infection. I had to be treated with antibiotics. Going back for another urinalysis in hopes it is all clear and I can then be put on the transplant list as ACTIVE for both medical facilities.
I am on the board's agenda for the approval of the transplant process through one of my two facilities I am choosing to list with. I am excited and extremely nervous! I will hear back by late afternoon tomorrow.
