A son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, Eagle Scout, beginning his scouting career in 1967, a former Boy Scout and Cub Scout leader, Vigil Honor member of the Order of The Arrow, a former 4-H helper, and a long time manager of Time Out, starting in 1977 in the Richland Mall and Cyberstation in the Galleria Mall, finds himself in need of assistance to manage the financial strains associated with End Stage Renal Disease and Kidney Transplant, having been recently listed on the transplant list.

Due to his End Stage Kidney Disease and other complicating medical conditions Joe and his wife have been on a fixed income for the last 6 years. Joe’s disability and Flo’s seasonal income provide a minimum level of security to take care of household and everyday financial obligations. Much of his medical care is covered however drugs in the “coverage gap” are difficult to cover. Travel to UPMC Pittsburgh and accommodations for and during transplant and recovery are not.
Joseph has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Give button.

To everyone who is willing to be a live organ donor. I commend you for your love and selflessness, yours is a path that may have beautiful, life affirming outcome, but be aware that even a great match can be turned down. What do you say to someone who has offered to give you a life saving part of their own body. For those who do not know there is a lot involved for the living organ donor. There are forms, there is three days of testing, being poked, prodded, interviewed, screened, all away from home if they are not in the same city as the recipient . The testing itself is covered by the recipient’s insurance but there are other costs. Any habits that the transplant team deems unhealthy could stand in your way. All blood work must match at any given time between donor and recipient for the transplant to work. There are people who test monthly in hopes of giving the gift of life. I don’t pretend to know all the ins and outs, I just know it is crazy. The extent that some donors go to be compliant is mind boggling. They make the choice as to the extent they are willing to go, and many times the recipient is not even aware of what is going on unless the donor tells them! Keep in mind the recipient is sick and their moods have wide swings. They sometimes have trouble expressing their emotions. They can lash out and seem ungrateful. It is all part of the disease. The care giver is not exempt from this Rollercoaster. A year of striving to meet the requirements to be a donor for a loved one or even a friend, is a trying experience, and as I said before, the recipient may not know. The transplant team may not share ANY information with the other person. This occurred in my personal situation and I am at a loss as to what to say to the person who was told “they have carefully reviewed your evaluation, test results and interviews with members of our Living Donor Transplant team. Unfortunately you have not met medical criteria to be a living kidney donor. “ It has been a long road to a disappointing end for us, but our gratitude for all they have been through and the fact they were willing to give up a part of themselves is endless! Thank you seems like so little to say but I hope this message let’s you know our gratitude, love and thanks.

Much love to all, Flo & Joe
