Yamila’s mother, her greatest supporter, had been dealing with a spine infection but was able to fully recover from everything she had to face. Meanwhile, during that winter, Yamila had the flu and was treated in the Intensive Care Unit.
Yamila’s father had to leave his job to take care of Yamila and her mother, Haydee, for approximately three months. Her parents had to use their savings to support the family and pay off the credit for the wheelchair-accessible van, which continues to need repairs for other issues from the crash.
Her parents also spent money updating Yamila’s old wheelchair-accessible van so she could continue attending out-of-state medical appointments and classes at George Mason University.
Please consider supporting Yamila and her family as they navigate the financial challenges during these unexpected life changes.
Yamila is a twenty-one-year-old who was born with Pompe disease and became the first international girl to participate in a clinical trial at Duke Children’s Hospital in North Carolina. Her story, ‘My Fight Never Ends: My Battle Against Pompe Disease,’ is a testament to her ongoing journey.
Her determination has guided researchers in finding better treatments for future patients. Medical science has shown that she can fulfill her dream of majoring in psychology. She has proven to those who know her that she is a living testament to overcoming obstacles and uses her success story to inspire others.”
Yamila chose to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because it assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Contributors can be sure that donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Give button.
