Cadie was born a healthy baby. However, by the time she was two weeks old she found herself being life flighted to a Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. She, along with her doctors and nurses, fought for her life and against all odds, she survived. Doctors determined Cadie had suffered non-accidental pediatric head trauma, and because of this she was removed from her biological parents’ care.
Cadie lived for three years in a wonderful care facility that provided for her medical needs, and whose staff clearly loved her. However, the care facility could not provide her what we all truly need: A loving family. Just before turning four years old, Cadie was scooped up by the Iveys and brought home to live and finally be part of a loving family.
Cadie’s needs are tremendous and she continually faces more with requiring hip surgery in the coming years as well as likely surgery on her trachea to help her breath. She is learning to communicate with an adaptive device, learning to swallow so she can experience taste and texture of food, and learning to reach her arms to use them in a more purposeful manner.
Currently unable to sit unassisted, she is fully dependent on a wheelchair for mobility. She is dependent upon her caregivers for all activities of daily living. Cadie is happiest when she is moving. She enjoys motion – whether in her wheelchair, a swing, a car – contributing to this campaign would help make her continued movement possible. Our hope is to help Cadie to move independently. While we know Cadie will always be fully dependent on us, we’d like Cadie to be able to experience independent mobility and go left if she wants to go left, or right when she wants to go right, and not be subject to taking the path we have chosen for her.
