Dear family and friends of Steve Nicholls,
As most of you know, Steve experienced a tragic accident on February 14th, 2021, resulting in a severe spinal cord injury. We are raising money through the nonprofit, Help Hope Live, to enable Steve and his family to live an independent, purposeful and vibrant life filled with love, joy and and a few more Bronco SuperBowls. We all know Steve has the strength, determination and the support of so many of his friends and family to make this possible. The funds raised through this campaign will go primarily towards the purchase of an Accessibility Modified Van that will allow Steve and Kate to have increased mobility, autonomy and the ability to expand their horizons and get back into the mountains again. Additional funds will be put towards the many ongoing uninsured medical and caregiving expenses associated with this catastrophic injury and towards the adoption of a specifically trained therapy dog.
Steve has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Give button.

Thank you for your support!
Spring has come and with the warmth and longer days it feels to be out again! May 31 marks Hope in Action! On this day donations to the national nonprofit @Help Hope Live for my campaign will go further than ever. Help Hope Live will cover the credit card fee donations in my honor at helphopelive.org. Please consider making a donation during Hope in Action on May 31 or helping me spread the word - or both THANK YOU! Your support means everything to me and allows for my continuing care.
Dear Friends and Family,
It's hard to believe that another year has come to an end. For me, it's a time of reflection and a time of anticipation. I am now approaching the 3rd anniversary of my accident.
I want to take a moment to thank you all for your financial support this past year in helping to cover the cost of my daily care. As most of you know I have two full time caregivers, Julie who comes in the mornings to get me up and going, and Alex who comes in the evenings to get me to bed. Both the morning and evening routines are quite complicated and time consuming. This care is not covered by insurance and is a completely out of pocket monthly expense. I need and appreciate any financial contributions you can give to my Help Hope Live Campaign, which is a tax-deductible donation to be used solely for my unreimbursed medical/care expenses.
This allows me to stay living and working in my apartment and to continue to make progress with my physical therapy and mental health.
This year I have had some new medical challenges beginning in March with a pressure sore on my right heel. This turned into a five month ordeal requiring multiple doctor’s appointments at Craig Hospital and limiting my physical therapy options. Thankfully, once it finally healed in August, I was able to resume my weekly physical therapy sessions and I am once again increasing my torso strength and muscle mass.
I also had my second annual Outpatient Evaluation at Craig Hospital in May, where the doctors determined that my physical limitations remain largely the same, so continued daily care from my caregivers is my only option. This is an added cost of $4500 a month that is not covered by insurance.
Kate and I had a bright spot in June when we went to the courthouse to officially obtain and submit our marriage license, followed by a small but welcome celebration with both of our mothers in attendance. This small ceremony was a drastic change to our original exchanging of vows which took place in the hospital in 2021!
In September I came down with Covid and continued to test positive for about 6 weeks. I really did not like the further isolation, but I was grateful for the around the clock care I received from my caregiver Julie, and also, Kate. I am most grateful to have made a full recovery and be out of my room!
Most recently in early December I suffered a second degree burn on my upper left thigh when I unknowingly spilled a very hot cup of coffee on my leg. I could not feel it and did not realize the severity until the damage was done. Subsequently I have had two surgeries and a hospital stay to control the cellulitis infection and have a skin graft. Thankfully it appears to be healing and I am looking forward to resuming my physical therapy once again.
I have learned a great deal about myself this year, how to cope with setbacks with resilience and my stubborn nature. I am learning how I fit into this new world with my spinal cord injury, navigating my wheelchair and being mindful of how and where I can push myself towards increased independence. I have learned a lot about how strangers perceive me and how I am finally beginning to recognize myself. I notice things now about life and people and circumstances that I never would have before, as I have so much more time for reflection. For this I am grateful and truly humbled by the love and support I have received from all of you.
I also had several small yet significant achievements. I learned how to push the elevator call buttons, (I also got stuck in one a few times), unlock my front door from the inside, normalize pooping my pants, opening the patio door to escape onto the balcony for some sun, and most importantly how to change the channel on the TV.
My wish is to continue to experience life to my fullest extent in this coming year, and therefore I again ask you to please donate to my Help Hope Live Campaign, I thank you profoundly and I wish you all a very Happy and Healthy New Year!
Steve
Dear Friends,
Thanks for all the love and generosity that so many friends and family of Steve and Kate have shown over the last few months in support of their efforts to create a new life in the face of such unimaginable challenges. This amazing initial group effort has helped raise nearly $30,000 toward their goal of reaching $100,000 to help pay for ongoing expenses for essential daily one-on-one direct care and towards the eventual purchase of a vehicle to help them with access to medical support and with transportation for work and life.
Each day, Steve requires assistance to get in and out of bed, to get dressed and undressed, to bathe, to shave, to brush his teeth, to comb his hair, to eat, and to perform almost all daily activities of living that we all take for granted. Unfortunately, the costs associated with providing this daily care is not covered by insurance.
The challenges of daily life are emotionally, medically, and financially taxing. Personally, I don’t think I fully comprehended the struggle - just to get through each day, week, let alone each month and year. I am in awe, but not surprised, by Steve’s strength, resilience and his positive attitude. Kate’s devotion, sense of humor, ability to see through the fog and just find the joy of being together is truly a lesson for us all.
I think, like most of us, I originally thought that insurance, work and medical support groups would all provide enough for Steve and Kate, and then we could all pitch in what we could and help them buy a very basic handicapped accessible vehicle to make a big daily difference for them. However, the increasing costs of daily care, in addition to mounting medical and physical therapy expenses that are essential for Steve’s continuing recovery and to sustain his ability to work, has to be their first priority. All this is to say that the initial funds must be devoted to these medical expenses before we are able to devote funds to the purchase of a vehicle.
I know that there are all sorts of worthy causes to support and that these times are becoming increasingly more challenging with the economy and just about everything else in the world, but as amazing as these two are, and as generous as so many people have been,
STEVE AND KATE STILL REALLY NEED OUR HELP.
Please consider making a contribution to help Steve rebuild his life. Even the humblest donation will communicate that we recognize the bravery of Steve’s journey and support the efforts of our good friend.
We also need your help to share this email and the link to the donor site with Steve’s larger circle of friends and family - from Denver to Portland, from his legal colleagues to climbing community, to anyone willing to help a courageous stranger in need, we need to increase the circle of support to help Steve and Kate create a new life together. Please consider posting on your Facebook, Instagram pages and other social media to help us reach his L&C college lacrosse team buddies, Sig Ep brothers, other depressed fellow Bronco fans and more.
I know the goal is a significant one, and I know it’s going to be a hard one to climb, but if Steve can already make it this far, I am hopeful we can help him make it even farther. We were really hoping to raise $50,000 by the end of the year, just to pay for Steve’s daily care on top of all his other medical expenses, with the rest eventually going to purchase of a car, but with the expenses climbing every dollar is going directly to help him work, rehabilitate and do all the things he needs to not covered by insurance.
Please consider making a tax deductible gift this year either on this site our contact Steve and Kate directly to let them know how you could help.
With love, gratitude and hope,
Friends of Steve Nichols
Dear Friends of Steve,
Thank you to all the people who have contributed to helping Steve in so many different ways during these challenging times. One of the greatest things we can do is to support Steve and Kate right now is to help them get an ADA / Mobility Works van, so that they can have the ability to get to work, get around Denver, and have some fun and eventually get back into the mountains again. These vans are not cheap; just the accessibility kit costs nearly $40,000. As we try to find a used, safe and good value van, we are probably looking at $50,000 total for a nearly 10 year old van with +/- 70,000 miles. (Check the photo album to see Steve's potential new ride!)
Please help us push towards $50,000 so a van can be purchased as soon as possible and pass this link around to let people know what an impact these funds will have for Steve, Kate and his family.
With love, gratitude and hope,
Brian
Your support will help Steve with many of his uninsured expenses like this amazing rehabilitation gym and program.

You helped me once with a legal issue when I was out of state and had no one. We have been friends for a long time, but Steve, you made a difference for me and I will always be grateful for that specific moment. You never know how much you have impacted others! Happy New Year, and all the best to you and your family!

Steve and Kate, this is Dee Anderson from Platt 2nd East, Kate's sophomore year. Rona shared your story & website with me. When Rona mentioned you two, I immediately recalled a memory of laughing with Kate and Rona in Rona's room on 2nd East. No idea what we were laughing about- but it was funny! :-) Thinking of you two and wishing you the best. xoxoDee
