You Can Make the Difference!
Dear Friends, Family, Friends of Family, Friends of Friends and Heroic Strangers,
It’s been some time since I’ve had the need to reach out to ask for help, a position that makes me somewhat uncomfortable. I much prefer doing for other people. However, I can no longer count on my wheelchair accessible vehicle nor can I finance a new one on my own. I’m hoping you can make the difference.
For those who may not know me, please allow me a moment of your time to give you some background. On August 4th, 2007, I was the victim of a horrible crime that changed me forever. I was attacked by a stalker I knew as an acquaintance who plotted to abduct me from my home in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. He talked his way into my home then put a gun to my head. When I fled for my life he opened fire and one of the bullets obliterated my 12th thoracic vertebrae which paralyzed me from the waist down. I landed in the driveway and then he ran me over and turned his tire on my abdomen and arm causing additional injuries. He fled the scene but came back minutes later, picked up the bullet casings, put them in his pocket, then dragged me across my driveway and left me to die behind the hedges. I prayed for my life while waiting to be rescued. I survived by a miracle and the grace of God, whom I firmly believe has a plan for me.
Allan Sinclair IV did not break my spirit. Though I spent over six months in hospitals and rehabilitation facilities, The Spinal Cord Injury Support Group offered encouragement to help me adjust, problem solve, and set goals. I became involved with various social activities within the group and took up the sport of handcycling. I’ve completed 13 full Marathons! More than that, I resolved to find meaning in my life by being there for people who need a helping hand. Often, I could be found driving those with greater physical disabilities than mine to medical appointments and delivering donated wheelchairs and equipment to those that do not have insurance coverage. I spent 4 years running the church Flea Market while delivering food to people shut in. I got a kick out of hosting foreign exchange students and cooking dinners for them typically eaten in the States for that full “American experience”. Today, I hope I am an inspiration to others by sharing my story and experiences through motivational speaking engagements.
Having a modified vehicle has been my lifeline, allowing me the freedom, flexibility and reliability to be there for people counting on me. Unfortunately, it’s no longer safe to drive my old 2004 Conversion Van. It’s broken down many times and I find it scary and dangerous with my medical condition, especially in the scorching Florida heat without reliable air conditioning. The ramp malfunctions, the interior is moldy and smells of burning oil. You get the idea. A new van can cost around $65,000 of which 1/3 has already been raised!
This is where I need your help. A fundraising campaign has been established in my honor with Help Hope Live to help with the financial burden of uninsured spinal cord injury-related expenses. Help Hope Live is a trusted nonprofit organization that has been providing community-based fundraising guidance to help patients and families in need for more than 30 years. All donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law and are held by Help Hope Live in the Southeast Catastrophic Injury Fund. Donations are allocated by Help Hope Live based on financial need for medical expenses. Please help me reach my goal. Consider making a tax deductible contribution today.
For credit card donations, please click the Give button.
Please keep an eye on the website because I will be updating the amount raised to date and posting news on upcoming fundraising events. With sincere gratitude, I thank you kindly for your consideration.
Christine Kent (christinekent@comcast.net)
So grateful that I was able to get a newer 2018 Van 3 years ago, and I'm very fortunate to have my own safe transportation now thanks to all who made that possible!!!
The costs associated with my Van are really more than I can afford though, but I manage thanks to those who have helped me along the way with kindhearted Donations.
It's crazy how much the cost of living has increased, and the amount I bring in every month on Social Security Disability doesn't cover my monthly expenses. I have some uninsured Medical related expenses, but mostly my Van expenses for Service & Maintenance, Gas, Repairs, Tires, and an Extended Warrantee which covers all the accessible features too for the Ramp, Auto Sliding Door, Computers, etc. puts me way over the top. I can never afford to have it washed, unfortunately, but periodically some kind person helps me with that a few times per year.
Any Donation is Most Appreciated and so helpful for me to continue to manage financially.
Thank you kindly and God bless you for caring to make a difference in my life
Dear Friends & Family, Thank you all who have helped me with my campaign and to those who have contributed to my Wheels for Christine Fund for a new Van. I am blessed that just after a year and a half I have reached my goal and was able to purchase a new 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L Plus completely modified by Braun and Mobility Works for my full accessibility! It is with a joyful and grateful heart that I now have a new van and will have safe and reliable transportation for myself and for those with disabilities whom I assist. Life is good and God is great! I thank God for all of those kindhearted, caring, and generous people who came forward to make a difference in my life and I am so blessed! May God bless each and every one of you who have helped me to reach this important goal.
Wheels for Christine
September 20th- Help Katie Foster celebrate her September 26th birthday with a contribution to #wheelsforchristine. What better way to celebrate life than to do something good for someone deserving. Katie is hoping she has 100 friends who will each donate $10 or more towards a handicapped accessible van for Christine. Let's get this amazing Christine back on the road in a safe vehicle so she can continue to help herself and others. Thank you.

Sentencing hearing for Christine Kent's attacker-December 3, 2009
At this time, I am in great need of replacing my old 2004 Conversion Van which is no longer safe or reliable for me to drive, especially when assisting others with disabilities. It’s broken down many times and I find it scary and dangerous with my medical condition, especially in the scorching heat. It’s been my pleasure to make a difference and help others with disabilities. I have often taken them to medical appointments and delivered donated wheelchairs and equipment to those that do not have insurance coverage. I continue to have medical appointments due to my debilitating physical condition to which I must have reliable transportation to get to safely.
Will you please make a Donation to help me raise the funds to replace my old Van with a new accessible one?

I’ve met Christine only one time at a fundraiser a few years ago for the Darrell Gwinn foundation. Christine has made a profound impact on my life. Christine is about the same age as me and it hit so close to home. Especially when I think about all the risks and chances I’ve taken in my lifetime. I admire this brave lovely soul very much and wish her the best. I hope others contribute to her cause as well. She deserves this and so much more.

Hi Christine, Just wanted to say hi and wish you all the success possible in your life. I hope your pain subsides as time goes on. I know it did for me. I was paralyzed in a car accident at age 26 (44 years ago) but like you decided to try and live life as well as I could and conquer the obstacles facing me. I really didn't have much choice in some respects as I had to baby girls 2 months old and 17 months old and a wife who couldn't mentally adapt to the kids and my accident and got serious mental health problems. So newly injured, newly divorced, with 2 kids to take care of I started my new life in a wheelchair. With family and friends help and a small settlement from the owner of the car involved in the accident I was able to hire a live-in housekeeper and started a new business venture with a friend which led to better financial situation.
I've never remarried I guess out of fear of having to go through that episode all over again but have had a number of girl friends and one long term live-in relationship. But finally she wanted a more secure future and moved on. I've done a lot of things in my disabled life, from flying airplanes to racing boats but now I'm getting old and worn out. I was very lucky health wise and except for a battle cancer in the upper left humerus about 10 years ago have never really been sick or had pressure sore problems. In fact they nick-named me "Superpara" at the Miami VA Spinal Cord Injury Center due to my ability to bench press 200 pounds when I only weighed 120 pounds and the ability to get from the floor into the chair with one arm pushing between my legs and the other on the chair to steady myself. Could also do a handstand on parallel bars from my wheelchair, and even grasping the sides of a diving board and doing a handstand butt first dive into the water. Oh those were the days.
Anyway, there can be success in life and I'm glad you have a good start. One thing I found to help push the pain to the side was staying busy and I stayed in bed maybe 5-6 hours a day since I was never comfortable lying down and just kept busy doing something. Never took anything but aspirin until I got that bone cancer and although the cancer is gone the damage to the bone from it eating its way out has left me with a nagging ache which I do use a 12hr slow release pain medication to bring it down to a level that I can cope with. But still I soldier on and still live independently but miss doing things like mowing and other yard work around my house on 3 acres in a very rural subdivision 25 miles from a town in NW Florida (left Miami in 1974).
If you can get in touch with me email as I'd love to communicate with you.
Sincerely, Jerry (jerry@lords.com)
Jerry/NW Florida
Dear Christine,
I heard your story yesterday on the show "Dates From Hell". I watch many shows like that, about crimes and murders, and they are all horrific stories, but yours really resonated with me so much. I was literally in tears the whole time. I kept thinking while watching, "oh please tell me she's not paralyzed.. please...", and at the end when they showed you in your wheelchair, I broke down again. I am SO sorry that you had to go through this. You are truly a special person, and proof that miracles can happen, in the fact that you are a survivor. You are an absolutely beautiful, strong, courageous, kind, inspirational woman.
I have had experiences with stalkers and creepy men before. I have had to take out 2 different restraining orders. One man threatened my life and would harass me through calls and emails (to myself AND my family) calling me awful names and describing in detail the ways he wanted to torture and kill me. I was terrified. So while of course, I did not go through it to the extent that you did, I still felt a strong connection to your story. If that happened to me, I don't think I would be half the woman you are. The strength you demonstrate is unbelievable. I truly consider you a hero.
I hope that you hold your head high, and know that the guy who did this to you did NOT win. You did, and you continue to win, every single day that you are a brave survivor. I know we don't know each other, but if I ever met you I would want to give you a big hug and tell you how awesome I think you are. The scumbag that hurt you will rot in hell. Please keep on being yourself and SMILE! I am so proud of you for being a fighter!!!
Sincerely,
Jennifer T.

Christine. Since the year 2009, I injured my left hip.
Since 2009, I was in constant pain. And since 2009, I
was walking with a limp. I was getting so tired of the
constant pain, that I wanted to chopped off my left leg.
I just wanted the pain to go away. Two times, the doctor
had to give me a shot into my left hip within a 5 month
span. I know what you`re going through with the pain.
Christine, hang in there. I know I am.
