My name is Landry Stahl, and I use a wheelchair due to an autoimmune condition called ankylosing spondylitis. This condition affects my ability to walk and stand due to chronic pain and fatigue.
For the past four years, I have been using a folding portable electric wheelchair that fits into the trunk of my sedan. While this setup has allowed me to maintain independence, it is not a sustainable long-term solution. These chairs are not designed for daily, full-time use, and I have gone through multiple chairs as a result. In addition, this setup requires me to lift a 50-pound wheelchair into and out of my trunk, which is physically difficult and increasingly unrealistic for me to continue doing.
Over time, my mobility needs have progressed. I am currently in the process of obtaining a custom power wheelchair that will better support my body for daily use. This chair will significantly improve my safety and independence, but it also requires a wheelchair accessible vehicle in order to be used effectively.
Wheelchair accessible vehicles are a significant expense, typically ranging from $50,000 to $70,000 depending on the vehicle and modifications. While I may be able to receive some assistance from government programs toward the cost of the accessibility conversion, I am responsible for covering the base cost of the vehicle itself. My goal is to raise enough to contribute a substantial down payment so that I can keep monthly payments at a level that is financially sustainable long-term.
At this time, I am seeking support to help fund a wheelchair accessible van. Access to government funding and assistance programs for vehicle modifications is currently limited, which means I am navigating much of this process independently. In addition, a portion of these funds may need to be used to cover my out-of-pocket costs for my custom power wheelchair after insurance.
My goal is to have both my custom chair and an accessible van in place by August. Having both pieces together is essential. Without an accessible vehicle, I will not be able to safely transport or fully utilize my custom wheelchair. This directly impacts my ability to maintain independence, continue working, and stay actively involved in my community.
I am continuing to explore all available resources, including financing options and assistance programs, but I am fundraising to help make this transition financially possible. Any support will go directly toward medical and mobility-related expenses, including the cost of a wheelchair accessible vehicle and necessary equipment.
Maintaining independence is incredibly important to me, especially as I continue my career as a high school teacher. This support will help ensure I can continue showing up for my students and living as independently as possible while managing a progressive condition.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story and for any support you are able to give.
