Nelson was first diagnosed with heart failure in May of 2020 after presenting to the hospital with 2 months of shortness of breath. He was found to have a severely weakened heart muscle due to cardiac sarcoidosis, a rare inflammatory condition. He overall had been doing well over the past two years on medications and with close follow up with his medical team.
On June 12, 2022, while driving, he began to feel unwell and pulled to the side of the road where he briefly lost consciousness. He was brought to the Emergency Department at North Shore University Hospital. In the ER he had two similar episodes of a lethal heart rhythm, that caused his defibrillator to shock his heart, saving his life. He was admitted to the cardiac intensive care unit in critical condition with multiple organ dysfunction, requiring several IV medications and a temporary mechanical pump to stabilize him. It was determined that due to his end stage heart failure, he would not be able to be discharged home without a heart transplant. He underwent extensive testing and evaluation and was ultimately listed for high urgency heart transplant. He remains critically ill in the intensive care unit while he waits for a suitable donor heart to become available. Once the perfect match is found, he will remain in the hospital for at least 2 weeks and a full recovery will take 6-12 months, during which time he will not be able to work.
Nelson came the United States from El Salvador in 1997 in search of better opportunities. Despite his advanced heart failure over the past two years, he has continued to work full time, providing for his wife and daughters. Recently he has been the sole provider for his family while his wife stays home to care for their seven-month-old daughter, Valerie. While he remains hospitalized and during his recovery period, Nelson will be unable to work and will need financial support to cover medications, housing, utilities, transportation, food, and basic necessities for both himself and his family.
As of today, there are 3,412 patients waiting for transplant. Nelson is hopeful to receive the gift of life before his clinical condition deteriorates. He is committed to taking excellent care of his new heart, if he gets the chance to do so. Never did Nelson think he would find himself at the age of 50, needing a heart transplant, but he is fighting for his life. We hope that you will consider touching Nelson’s life and help ease the financial burden he is facing. This will allow him to focus on a healthy recovery and a long life ahead with his beautiful daughter and family, whom he adores.
