On May 30, 2015, Tyson contracted Bacterial Meningitis as a 6 month old baby. Throughout a touch and go 7 week long hospital stay Tyson’s life drastically changed. He was diagnosed with a Traumatic Brian Injury which resulted in life long complications with Cerebral Palsy and a drug resistant form of Epilepsy called Lennox Gastaut Syndrome.
Tyson has shown from very early on that he is a fighter and will work extremely hard to make physical and mental gains. During the last 7 years of Tyson’s recovery and health concerns he has experienced 4 ICU hospitalizations and countless other specialist visits, hospital stays and medical procedures.
Tyson’s passions include: singing along to Frozen II, telling jokes through his communication device and laughing at funny animal sounds. He loves writing “raps” through his communication device and is continually growing his writing and literacy skills. As we continue to work with Tyson’s therapists we are able to slowly unlock his thoughts, choices and desires. Tyson thrives in the school setting where he can interact with his friends. He finds so much joy being around other kids, listening to music, reading books and playing games.
As Tyson continues to grow and develop he relies on his wheelchair more and more to access his world including his communication device, health care and participation in social interactions. Over the last year it has become increasingly difficult to transport Tyson in a typical car and has caused him great discomfort to ride in any chair besides his wheelchair.
As a family we have truly seen the daily need for a wheelchair accessible van so that Tyson can ride longer than 1 hour in the car without discomfort and continue to participate and enjoy the world around him. Because the the cost of purchase for a wheelchair accessible van is so much greater than a typical vehicle purchase we are reaching out to our community for help at this time and ask that you support us in our efforts to continue to give Tyson access to his healthcare, education and activities and connection to his world.
Donations to our Help Hope Live fundraiser will alleviate the financial burden we are currently facing as a family and will provide a drastic increase in Tyson’s quality of life and comfort of transportation moving forward.
