Cyrus, AKA “Zippy”, was born with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita, a condition affecting 1 out of 3,000 live births. Arthrogyposis can cover a wide range of diagnoses wherever two or more body parts are affected by contractures. His specific type of Arthrogryposis makes him 1 in 10,000! (He’s one of a kind.) Zippy is affected in all four limbs and his spine. Basically, he has stiff joints and weak muscles. But he is incredibly strong!
Zippy attends seven therapy appointments every week. That does not include his medical appointments. Arthrogryposis is not progressive, but as he grows, his body will always try to return to the way it was at birth (extended elbows, bent knees, a curved spine, clubfeet, dislocated hips, etc.). This means it is crucial he continues stretching his limbs as he grows. He had his fourth surgery on March 9, 2023. The surgery involved cutting the tendon behind his right knee in order to promote straighter extension of his leg. Our goal is for him to maintain a less than 20 degree bend in his knees, so that he has the best chance of independently standing and eventually walking. We maintain his less than 20 degree bend through lots of stretches and wearing full-leg night braces.
You might wonder, “will he ever walk?” – We don’t know. There are a wide range of outcomes for people with Arthrogryposis. But I do know this – whether or not he stands and walks – he will be successful. Walking is not a measure of success. – He already lights up every room he enters. His gentle spirit and curious mind entertain hearts of all those he encounters. Certainly, it can feel like a job – taking care of his needs, but he is our joy!
Family and friends of Cyrus Mood are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund his uninsured medical expenses associated with his rare condition. One of the most beneficial parts of his treatment has been Occupational Therapy, Equine-Assisted; a more specific way to say hippotherapy. Hippotherapy is treatment with the help of a horse. His Occupational Therapists assist him riding a horse, which gives his body simulated movement of walking. This is important for brain development as well as core strength.
We have chosen to fundraise with Help Hope Live because even with insurance, his medical care and equipment is not cheap! Your support already helped fund his adaptive therapy bike and I can’t wait to see what other supports we can offer him with your help. He desperately wants to keep up with his 4-year-old big sister! He told me when he gets big he wants to play soccer just like her!
In 2024, we are working on getting him an adaptive feeding device – the Obi robot – and a gait trainer for walking.
Thankfully, Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Medical equipment has it's own version of aches and pains like our aging bodies. When our knees need a rest, we might put our feet up or take a bath. Zippy's wheelchair sometimes needs a tune up or parts to be replaced. Recently, we took him and his power chair in for maintenance. He got a new piece that keeps his right arm rest from wiggling around all over the place, some new straps for his legs to keep from sliding, some adjustments and a new screw to hold up the back of his chair (which I had held together with zip ties). We aren't finished with the zip ties though, his joystick is trying to fall off, so we have that (hopefully) secured with zip ties and tape. Each part (each screw, knob, strap, etc.) has to be ordered...through insurance. Each piece costs more than if you needed a lightbulb from the hardware store. And then we wait. And wait. And wait some more. Thankfully, we have a great durable medical equipment team and they order things quickly and efficiently as soon as I send a picture with the issue. But, it all takes time. Thankfully his chair isn't running around amuck running in to parked cars like it did last week though! What a life...the equipment for life - life. Thanks for all your support. It keeps Zippy zooming with a smile.
A huge thanks to all our donors! - Your donations made another huge impact in our lives. Zippy now has door open/closing independence! We Hear You Open Doors (https://wehearyouopensdoors.com/) has an amazing device, aptly called The Hero, that allows Zippy to use a push fob to open and close our back door! This has revolutionized the way Zippy gets around! THANK YOU!
This summer has been a blast! But it has also been a lot of change.
At the start of summer Zippy has 2 Physical Therapists, 2 Occupational Therapists, 1 Speech Therapist and 2 Occupational Therapy-Equine Assisted (Hippotherapy) Therapists. Now he has 1 Physical Therapist, 1 (new) Occupational Therapist, no speech therapist, and 1 "horse"-therapist. For various reasons (burnout, marriage, moving, new jobs) some of our beloved therapists are no longer "his." We wish them the best.
The good news is that our current Physical Therapist should be able to pick Zippy up to cover his second PT visit/ week, his new Occupational Therapist is equally amazing and dedicated, he currently doesn't need speech and we get to keep the amazing OT-equine assisted therapist.
Another change has been - SCHOOL! Zippy started public school and has a new one-on-one aide. She is fabulous! The school has a great team of staff and they are all very invested in Zippy. GREAT NEWS!
Good news: A while ago, Zippy had an MRI (ordered by Neurology). There was some possibility that his optic nerve might be swollen (that's as best I understand their findings). Zip visited the Ophthalmologist yesterday and is all good! The Ophthalmologist said Zip is good to go and doesn't need to have a follow-up unless something else came up! Hooray!
Last week, Dr. Gogola (Zippy's upper orthopedic specialist - the doctor who monitors and cares for his joints/ bones and muscles in his upper body) was impressed that Zippy has gained 10 degrees of rotation in his right wrist! He is able to rotate his hand (via wrist) inward more since he has been working so much on tabletop playing. Dr. Gogola was surprised; she said that is rarely a joint/ appendage that gains additional range of motion. Yay, Zippy!
All funds raised between midnight on Friday, May 31 and 3 a.m. ET on Saturday, June 1, make an extra impact. - There will be no credit card fees! Help Hope Live will cover the credit card fee for donations made in honor of Zippy to cover his out-of-pocket therapy expenses.
Zippy is THREE! We celebrated in a dino-mite way with friends and tons of dino fun! There was a homemade two-layer dino cake, dino decor, dino excavation and a dino dig. We ate dino scales (ruffles chips), dino droppings (chocolate covered raisins), dino fingernails (bugles), dino kneecaps (powdered donut holes) and more. Friends could adopt a dino (a dino craft) and get tatted up with dinos, including sparkly dinos! There was dino fun galore. We are so grateful to have such a loving and supportive community with friends like each of you.
I want to thank everyone for their donations this year. I have a few updates. We are starting back with speech therapy because he is starting to stutter. It’s not necessarily a concern.
We are going to the doctor this morning because he developed pressure sores over the weekend on his sweet little feet. They popped up so fast and I feel guilty for not noticing them sooner. He is not wearing any orthotics until we get them resolved.
He starts school on Tuesday! He will go to pre-preschool full-time and have a one-on-one aide to help him! We are so grateful our church school is supportive and accommodating. He can’t wait to be like his big sis!
The Houston Chronicle wrote a story to feature Zipoy and Arthrogryposis! Check it out: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/lifestyle/renew-houston/health/article/Houston-doctors-help-baby-Cyrus-17563368.php
We are in the process of building Zip’s therapy bike with Freedom Concepts! This will allow him to practice balance, gain strength and have fun! It will be extra special for him to have a bike like his big sister! This is a medically indicated expense that insurance does not cover. Even with good insurance, there are lots of uncovered expenses that add up. Thank you for your support!
