Healing Our Community with Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Please join us in our mission to restore and enhance the quality of life for veterans, first responders, and other individuals in Bucks County and surrounding communities who are suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI)/concussion, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), long-haul COVID, vaccine injury, autism spectrum disorders, multiple sclerosis, stroke, Lyme disease, and other neurological disorders.

We are Oxygen Oasis, a state-of-the-art hyperbaric center. Oxygen Oasis was established by a wife-and-husband team—Victoria Bliss-Calkins and Tom Calkins—after witnessing firsthand the healing power of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. The Calkins sought treatment for the radiation injury that occurred after Tom underwent treatment for Stage 4 tonsil carcinoma. After completing hyperbaric therapy, Tom regained flexibility in his neck, reduced the frequency of muscle spasms, and was able to eat normally again, something that was previously impossible due to damage to his salivary glands during radiation therapy. Tom and Victoria felt a calling to help others find the same ray of hope they discovered in hyperbaric oxygen therapy and founded Oxygen Oasis.

Dubbed "the great mimicker" for its tendency to be misdiagnosed as other illnesses, Lyme disease is known to affect thousands of people throughout the world, but the actual number of sufferers may be 5 to 10 times greater. Lyme disease is a bacterial infection that is usually transmitted via the bite of an infected tick.

Read this beautiful recovery story shared by the mom of one of our young patients affected by Lyme disease:

"I would like to start our story by expressing my sincere gratitude for all the wonderful people working at Oxygen Oasis. We are deeply thankful for the genuine care and emotional comfort that we found while my son was receiving treatment here. Our family's Lyme saga began when a tick bit our son when he was 4½ years old. Prior to that, he was fully functional and spoke two languages, loved playing with friends, and was a sweet and social child.

After the tick bite, my child's health started declining in all aspects. At first, the changes were subtle, but we as parents started noticing unusual behavioral changes, distraction, and sensory issues that were never present before. At around 7 years old, the changes in his health became more pronounced as he started losing skills and academic abilities. We desperately visited more than 40 healthcare professionals in 3 different countries, and every possible test was done; but even the "best" doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with our child. By this time, he was not able to play with friends anymore and had lost his speech.

By the will of God, we visited one more specialist who ordered the right labs. Tests came back positive for multiple tick-borne infections. At 8 years old, he was started on an aggressive antibiotic therapy, which helped to some degree with certain symptoms, but his progress eventually plateaued. His doctor revised the treatment protocol and suggested starting HBOT (Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. - author's note). It was a totally new approach, as we had never heard about HBOT before. We did our research to find out more. I read articles and books explaining how HBOT works, visited online forums with people sharing their post-HBOT experiences, and, most importantly, read a study conducted by Dr. William Fife of Texas A&M University, which was very detailed and promising. With the help of our beloved church, we were able to start the therapy at Oxygen Oasis Hyperbaric Wellness Center, a new state-of-the-art hyperbaric center.

When we first walked into the center, we were immediately immersed in an atmosphere of emotional comfort and trust. The doctors and staff are extremely professional and knowledgeable and possess all the qualities that we, as parents, were hoping for. The technicians are not only smart and well educated but are also warm, friendly, and caring people. When I first met the owner of the center, I was touched by her kindness and compassion. She was always attentive to our needs and supported us all the way through our healing journey.

With the help of HBOT, my son regained many of his lost skills. He got his speech, his smile, and his playful personality back. The difference between before the treatments and after is so dramatic that it seems like a miracle. What's most important is that we are still seeing the improvements continue even though the therapy is finished. Oxygen Oasis has the most professional, caring, and experienced staff we ever encountered at a medical facility. They go above and beyond their patients' expectations in every possible way. Coming here and receiving the treatment at this absolutely wonderful facility was the best decision we made - our child is now on the road to recovery."

At the start of 2012, our patient Ivan Gutierrez was a promising young student with dreams of attending law school. Weeks later, a devastating brain injury left him unable to walk, speak, or function independently. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy brought Ivan on a path to regaining the skills and senses he lost to an anoxic brain injury.

Read the miraculous story of Ivan in his own words:

"2012 was the date of my severe anoxic brain injury and the day I almost died. While attending the University of Michigan, I began abusing prescription drugs. This deadly addiction led me to stray away from my family, my morals, and my education. I was once an ambitious student with hopes of attending law school. I spiraled down a path of self-destruction.

Through the grace of God and the work of medical professionals, I secured a second chance at life. My rebirth as a sober, self-aware young man has been an incredibly challenging and unpredictable journey. At every juncture, I was boxed in by the pessimistic, but statistically supported, expectations of numerous doctors and rehabilitation therapists. I, however, am not a prototype in a medical textbook. Consequently, predictions by doctors about my recovery have been largely incorrect. Furthermore, I refused to be limited by the educated guesses of those who do not appreciate that each brain injury is unique. In fact, each individual injury or disorder is distinct and deserves a fair chance at exhausting all possible remedies.

My family and I went against the recommendations of medical professionals who discouraged the use of innovative therapies such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT). The HBOT I received thus far has undeniably catapulted me to a new level of function. I was never supposed to survive, to speak, to see, to hear, to feel, to move, to have memory, or to be able to read and write. Contrary to the prognoses of several doctors, I acquired all of these skills and am ripe for making more remarkable progress. ...

My gains are unbelievable and completely inconsistent with anoxic brain injury recoveries. After completing only 50 of the 100 treatments my doctor recommended at Oxygen Oasis Hyperbaric Wellness Center, I regained my ability to do mathematics, I have significantly improved my ability to speak clearly, and I have initiated the process to return to higher education. Additionally, I recently took my first steps with a walker. HBOT has enabled me to withstand more vigorous physical therapies such as gait training.

Oxygen Oasis has become like a second family for me. I enjoy each session because I know that it will bring me that much closer to actualizing my physical, cognitive, and educational goals. Additionally, the staff is wonderfully welcoming and professional. I look forward to future sessions, future achievements, and a future as the man I almost never had the chance to become."
