At about 9 months old, Austin was diagnosed with bronchiolitis obliterans, a chronic lung condition, as a result of an adenovirus infection that left his lung functioning only at 40-50% capacity. Since then, he has required 24/7 supplemental oxygen usage and ventilator support at night his entire life. However, this didn’t stop him from living a normal life and acquiring his Bachelor of Science in Information Systems in Spring 2022!
In September 2022, Austin started noticing a change in his health and was going in and out of the hospital with several ER visits. Eventually, things took a turn for the worse when Austin had a routine ventilator check-up at the end of October. What was supposed to be a normal check up with an overnight stay turned into an extended stay. He started experiencing another episode of excess CO2 in his body but this time further led to respiratory failure. His lungs were no longer able to provide him the proper support in his body. As a result, doctors performed an emergency surgery to get him on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), basically an external machine functioning as his lungs. ECMO was only a temporary solution, Austin had to be put on the lung transplant waitlist and wait for a donor match to come back home.
An early Christmas miracle came and Austin got a donor match at the beginning of December. The good news came just in time as he was battling an infection in his lungs through that week.. After approximately 9 hours in the OR, Austin underwent a successful double lung transplant surgery.
He’s currently recovering post-transplant at home now and was able to celebrate his birthday at home!
Austin and his family are partnering with the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund for $10,000 to help pay for any uninsured medical expenses and bills during his post-transplant care. These expenses include travel to and from the hospital where he will regularly get evaluated for signs of lung rejection and help pay for any home and utility bills while Vamee, Austin’s Mom, takes unpaid leave to take care of Austin during his critical first year with his new lungs. All donations are tax deductible and held by Help Hope Live. They will be administered by Help Hope Live to pay for transplant related expenses.
Family and friends of Austin Yang are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with transplantation.

Hi there!
I recently started pulmonary rehab last week. pulmonary rehab is pretty much physical therapy with a focus on the respiratory system. This is my third rehab I’ve done. So, I know what to expect and to which I’m sure it’ll be great for me post-transplant. Working out now isn’t that hard for me. Before, I would be feeling my muscle burn from the lack of oxygen when working out. But now, I don’t feel such a thing anymore. My only issue right now is my muscles being cramping up during work outs. Most likely from my muscles atrophying for months until now. But that’s still better than doing your best and feeling super defeated after what seems to be a fairly easy workout routine. Additionally, with the warmer weather here, I’m walking around my neighborhood and I’m starting to like that even more now. I can’t wait for spring to be here really.
Lastly, my transplant clinic appointments are now once a month! I’m surprised as I thought that wouldn’t be a thing until Month 6 or so. But the doctors are saying I’m doing really well post-transplant. Whatever their suggestion is, I’ll take it. Less rush hour for me, honestly. Traffic sucks here.
Hi!! Big news! It's been a week since I had my tracheostomy removed! Initially it felt weird. It felt like I was naked. But as the week progress, I slowly got used to not having the trache. It's almost for the new me for this new year!
It'll take a couple more weeks for it to close. Though if it won't, I may have it sealed surgically. Which would be ironic since last January, I had a surgical correction procedure on my tracheostomy site.
Overall, from yesterday's appointment, my lungs are great! Although I'm having some stomach issues lately. Hopefully that'll be treated soon with some home remedy/OTC stuff.
See ya in the next update!
Hi, Austin here again! Small update about myself. I still have my tracheostomy. I was not ready to completely remove my trache last Thursday's appointment. But, it is over 24 hours that I am breathing room air. I've essentially been breathing on my own since yesterday afternoon. It feels different, a little more work and adjustment mentally. But my oxygen saturation is sitting around 95% to 98% when seated at rest. Shoot, even a few hours yesterday of room air, I went on the treadmill. My sats then was around 94% to 97%.
Pretty good if you ask me.
Again, thank you for the donations! My parents and I appreciate it very much!
Hi, Austin Yang here! I received my double lung transplant on the 9th of December 2022! It's a little over 3 weeks since but it still feels surreal that the transplant actually happened. There are moments at night where I am speechless that have a donor's lung in me. As much as that keeps me up, what else keeps me going is that I am feeling better than ever before! And I will get better in the coming months! I have been home since the 27th of December, but had a small hospital stay this past weekend due to a minor pneumothorax. It's great to be home for almost 2 months in the hospital!
I currently still have my tracheostomy. Hopefully I will be getting that removed this Thursday! Fingers crossed! It's unnerving and I'm anxious but this is one of the things that I look forward to once I received my lung transplant.
I'll be back with another update on how things go in the next few days.

Hi Austin. I'm a classmate of Josh's from when he and I were at CU. I'm glad to hear you are doing well following your transplant! My father had a heart transplant several years ago, so I understand a lot of what all is involved before, during, and after the procedure, and how much these donations mean. I know you have a big year of post-transplant appointments ahead of you and wish you and your family the best!
P.S. Coincidentally, on the the night of my dad's heart transplant, I was in a waiting room with a family who was there for their loved one's double lung transplant. :)
