Leonard, also known as “Jay”, suddenly fell ill in October 2022 from an unknown viral infection that led to many Emergency Room visits, which also led to being flown out multiple times due to lack of access to speciality healthcare. Jay was diagnosed with non-ischemic cardiomyopathy with ejection fraction 10% and congestive heart failure. We’re asking family and friends to join us in fundraising for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to help with critical expenses Jay will face immediately after his transplant, including the cost of lodging near the Mayo Clinic where he is required to stay for a minimum of 90 days following his discharge.
Jay has always shown compassion in caring for the Native elders and has often been generous with his time to complete his job with the Navajo Tribal Utility Authority (NTUA). Jay worked with NTUA in various town around the Navajo Nation, but most recently in Dilkon, AZ as a Meter Reader. He installed and inspected water and electric meters for Native communities for 8 years. Jay’s positive attitude and willingness to overcome his condition is inspiring, and he needs our help.
While Jay has health insurance, many transplant expenses are surprisingly not covered, such as the monthly anti-rejection medications he needs to take for the life of his new heart. Jay is required to relocate for at least six months or more for post-operative care. Donations will help cover rent, utilities, transportation, transportation maintenance, food, and other expenses. Other expenses may include co pay, medication, lost of wages for Jay and his caretaker. Jay will be placed on Leave Without Pay after December 2022 and will need help financially to focus on recovery.
Family and friends of Leonard Begay are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with transplantation.
Leonard has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Give button.
