My name is Helene Ferester and I have lived my whole life with Cerebral Palsy. I worked for 20 years as a front-end manager for my family’s pharmacy and general store. While I am blessed to have had the unending support of my mother through her life, she passed earlier this year. The loss of her help with daily tasks has led to increased difficulty through all areas of my life.
We are looking to raise enough money to buy an electric Hoyer lift to aid in my care in my bedroom. Also, with the passing of my mother, I now need to pay for caregivers to assist me in my daily life. This would include help with personal hygiene, cooking, shopping excursions, medical appointments, and any other things that come up during my daily life. They would be here from 9-6, 7 days a week, to ensure that I am safe and able to successfully navigate my environment.
I am of very limited mobility and am lucky that insurance has helped in part to pay for my electric wheelchair and to retrofit a minivan with a ramp and space for my chair, but the vehicle is not set up for me to drive it. I am also responsible for the cost of maintenance, insurance, and other costs of owning a vehicle. Some of these (maintenance and repairs) can be covered by my campaign funds, allowing me to allocate my resources more effectively.
Unfortunately, insurance will not pay for the version of the Hoyer that will work in my bedroom. The space is too small to use a lift that is not installed in the ceiling. It is unsafe for me to transfer without a lift, and professional caregivers will refuse to do so. I am hoping to be able to raise the money needed to buy the lift and pay for its professional installation.
This would mean the world to me and would be a way to honor the memory of my mother. She spent many years working to ensure that I had as many opportunities and high a quality of life as possible, and would have liked to see that continue.
