My family is finishing our fourth month of the worst nightmare we’ve ever had… and it’s one that doesn’t end with sunrise each morning. On December 29th, 2022, my parents’ truck went off the road near their Philo home in Northern California, and crashed into a row of trees. Thankfully my mother was largely unscathed, but my father was badly bruised, broke one clavicle, suffered a fracture to his skull and severe brain trauma.
He was airlifted to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital where he spent three weeks in the ICU deep in a coma from his traumatic brain injuries. It was the worst three weeks of our lives, seeing him in such a devastating state, completely unresponsive and unstable, with no idea what was going to happen. (click “see all” for the rest.)
The doctors deemed from his MRI that he had frontal lobe and mild axonal damage. Thankfully our dogged fixation on his recovery was rewarded and eventually he was stable enough to move to a sub-acute facility.
He is now in the Bay Area in his second sub-acute facility. After one month in a fully unresponsive coma, he is slowly regaining consciousness. (See “Updates” below for more on his current state. I typically lack brevity, so I tried my best to be concise here.)
Mom has been with him nearly every waking moment. Staying with friends, she very rarely visits their home which is 3 hours away. I come up from LA for a week or so at a time, every other week or two.
His healing is proving to be painfully slow, but the only possible outcome for us is his full recovery! So we are going to do all we can to help that happen.
~Financial Assistance~
It is clear the road ahead will be a long and arduous one. We are now at the mercy of Medicare and MediCal. We are so grateful for those programs, but they only pay for so much and not the highest quality care.
My parents are both long retired and live incredibly frugally, solely on their meager social security payments. They live alone with their two kitties, off the grid in a strawbale house we built in the mountains of Philo, CA, 3 hours north of the Bay Area. In their early 70s, I find their excellent health and way of life an incredible feat.
After some convincing, we are setting our pride aside and turning to the generosity of our friends and community. We have already been shown immeasurable kindness and support by people in our lives, and cannot thank everyone enough.
We were originally going to make a GoFundMe, but it can get very complicated as the money counts as extra assets and often results in beneficiaries losing their health insurance. We have chosen to use Help Hope Live because they pay all expenses directly, and ***all donations through them are tax-deductible***. Please also consider mailing them a check, that way there won’t be a credit card processing fee removed.
The money raised through our campaign here will pay for medical expenses for dad, such as:
~rehab facilities
~therapies
~caretakers
~wheelchairs
~any modifications our house might need if he needs a wheelchair for a while once he is home, etc.
It also allows for a small stipend for mom or I when we are with him and thus his caretaker, will cover some of mom’s gas costs, and will help with my travel when I come to be with them. This is obviously our focus for crowdfunding, as we want dad to get the quality care he needs.
The money won’t help with other expenses that are not directly for my dad, so if anyone additionally wants to help mom or I, send me an email at ocallen707@gmail.com. That money would be used to buy them a new computer (their iMac was destroyed in the crash), therapy, acupuncture, general living expenses for when I am with them and can’t work, etc. This, of course, is not our priority.
In researching brain trauma rehabilitation centers, I found they can be upwards of $2,400 a day! No wonder people often set a goal to raise $100,000+ when they do medical crowdfunding. That’s not even two months at some of the better facilities. Oy vey! We are setting our goal at $50,000. If we need to increase it, we shall.
We know well that times are financially challenging for everyone. Any little amount helps, truly, and as my extremely thrifty mother always reminds me: “it all adds up!”
~Daddy Details~
Anyone who knows my dad understands how invaluable he is. His articles on many worldly topics can be found in various publications, he writes beautiful poetry, is a talented orator, a scholar of all things esoteric and profound, and a skilled woodworker and artist. He has dedicated so much of his life to helping create a peaceful and just world.
As a husband and father he is so loving and sweet. He is funny, witty, passionate, hard working, and a lover of coffee and chocolate. He has endured and overcome so much hardship in his life, and my heart breaks thinking about how much pain he is in right now.
Thank you so much to anyone who takes the time to read this. Even if you can’t donate financially, all prayers and support are appreciated, and if you are so inclined, please share this with those in your life.
It is terrible seeing my mama unable to really talk with the love of her life and partner of 40 years, but I have Faith he will be with us fully again soon! There’s no alternative!
From the deepest trenches of my heart,
Olivia

Hi there, everyone. Thank you all for your patience and continued love and support. This journey with dad is proving to be a long one. It seems he is incrementally improving, very slowly, but we pray surely.
Hi everyone. I know we haven't shared an update in quite a while. We continue to be SO grateful for everyone's support and love. Unfortunately things with dad have been going at a much slower and more frustrating pace than we hoped. We are working closely with a brain specialist and trying all sort of things to get him back on track, and we trust they are working, it's just taking a long time. He is still in the subacute ward in Alameda. We pray soon he will be able to get his trache removed and thus move to a skilled nursing facility. Closer to home. Continue to keep him in your thoughts and prayers.
Wow! We are so moved by how much support we are receiving to help with dad's recovery. There have been a few medical setbacks, but he is recovering and doing well now. He is back on track to soon take the swallow-test to get his trache removed and begin to drink water and swallow liquid food on his own. Thank you all so much for your prayers, your donations, and your love.
Over the following weeks after dad finally opened his eyes, he was able to make eye contact and eventually began to quietly speak. He can now sometimes answer questions or say things rooted in present space and time. Much of the time, however, he is in some dreamland away from reality, or not awake at all. He has very little control over his body, as in he has successfully given a thumbs up, one time. He can sometimes move his legs and arms in a very subtle way when asked, although his arms cause him a great deal of pain. He has daily physical, occupational and speech therapy to help him regain function. Perhaps the most heartwarming (and heartbreaking), is he can now offer us very small but very warm smiles.

I am in my early 70\'s as well. I read your story and wanted to let you know that back after 911 NASA and Navel Medical Research Center gave a Micronutrient Formulation and did $24 million in research and studies on this formula. They used it on traumatic brain injuries and had phenomenal results due to the Anti-inflammatory properties. I am more than happy to help you check this out for your dad and even your mom as well as they also used it on PTSD and many other inflammatory conditions. Please let me know if you have any questions. My fb is Kathy Song Campbell and I go by Song. I hope your dad is doing better....would love to help.

Hi Olivia,
You may or may not remember me from the Share conferences. I\'m a friend of your Mom and Dad from the Northwest Share group. I\'m so sorry about the difficulties that all of you in the your family have been going through! I made a donation today.
I want to let you know that I tried to write to you on the email given in the message, but my note came back to me. (I don\'t know if the problem is my computer or some problem with the email you gave.
At any rate, I want to let you know about some potential extra income that is possible, at some point in the future, if your Dad does not completely recover; and that is Social Security Disability. (I used to be a physician for Social Security Disability who adjudicated cases.) If after 12 months from injury, your Dad is not improving and is stable, he could get Social Security Disability. It is important to do everything that is requested i.e. filling out the Activities of Daily Living. It usually takes 4 months on average to have one\'s case decided, but it can take longer. It is very helpful to have a lawyer help you (there are lawyers who specialize in Social Security Disability claims), but it is not necessary.
Also, you or your mother may be able to be compensated for any care that you provide. I am less familiar with the requirements to qualify for this, but in many of the cases that I saw, a relative was compensated for the full time care that they were providing. I would recommend that you pay a visit to your local Social Security and find out more about this.
Lots of love and healing vibes to all,
Sue

Olivia, thank you for taking time to share the update. I\'m praying for support for all of you.
I just learned about this campaign today. I have made requests of Maitreya for a healing miracle for your dad.
I made a new reque$t today, so I\'m posting here (for the record) with the full expectation that \"whatsoever shall be asked in His Name and with faith in the response will see it accompli$hed\". In advance of this miracle, I will send a donation and add on for the fee.
Love to you, Nancy & Bill

Thinking of you, Bill & Nancy & Olivia -- holding you in a circle of love. Can't help but think of the conference room at the Marin Headlands, the sound of the ocean waves, perhaps a swallow tending to its nest above the doorway. Profound peace and steadiness. May all of that be with you.
