Katrina has been visiting the Tufts Medical Center in Boston MA since 2013. She has been treated for hereditary cardiomyopathy. Her heart failure led her to receive a pacemaker/defibrillator, surgery for milrinone IV, and then surgery for an LVAD (Left Ventricular Assist Device).
This surgery was in May of 2020 during the height of Covid where no family could be with her or visiting. It was a very tough time. After almost 3 years she received 3 calls for a heart. Two of them were for what is called heart-in-a-box hearts, both of which after all the prep, were found to be not viable. The third call was for a donor’s heart on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2023. The transplant took place and after 2 months in the hospital and physical rehab, Katrina made it home. This is where we are now.
Katrina is a daughter, sister, mom, cousin, aunt, and grandma. Her struggles with heart failure have been long and hard. Her courage, strength, and love of family have been her driving force.
Without help from family and friends, we would not have been able to make it this far. The cost for years of traveling to Boston, places to stay, parking, etc has been expensive. With ongoing needs for visits to the heart transplant clinic and the need for equipment for home use, we have engaged with Help Hope Live for assistance.
We hope this will reach a broader group of people who want to help folks like Katrina to get the things she needs and attend her ongoing doctor appointments, traveling from Vermont to Boston MA.
Our family and friends are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live in honor of Katrina Maness to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with transplantation.
Katrina has chosen to fundraise for Help Hope Live in part because Help Hope Live assures fiscal accountability of funds raised and tax deductibility for contributors. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical and related expenses. To make a tax-deductible donation to this fundraising campaign, click on the Give button. Katrina was 11 days heavily sedated after her heart transplant. The surgery and process took a toll on her body. She was on continuous kidney dialysis, due to kidney failure. Even when moved out of ICU, dialysis was needed. The day before a permanent port was put in her kidneys slowly woke up.
Being heavily sedated she lost her ability to walk. She was in rehab to get her muscles working again. Even at home, there is Physical Therapy to gain mobility, and she is still working on walking. She is also struggling with a large number of meds and working with doctors to balance them so she can maintain a healthy and productive life.

Such an arduous journey for you Katrina. But it\'s really amazing to see how determined you are. So proud of you and thankful to everyone that\'s been there along the way.
