Adrian’s Story, his immediate mobility necessity…
Adrian was a healthy newborn. When he was a baby he crawled, stood up and walked too. But when he reached the age of 3 years his body started to have drastic changes. He started showing signs of progressive weakness and loss of skeletal muscles. Sadly, Adrian was losing the ability to sit, stand, or walk. Because of the absence of a rod-shape protein called dystrophin in his muscles of the heart and lungs his heart and lungs were affected as well. Unfortunately, a year later in his early childhood at the age of 4 he was diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). An inherited disorder of progressive muscular weakness, typically in boys. The life expectancy is 26, however, with excellent care, some may live up to their 30s. This rare progressive disease worsened quickly in him and at the age of 7 he was unable to walk. Adrian is 20 years old now. He currently lives with his parents and just finished high school. His mobility is limited, and he can only move one of his hands to be able to move his motorized wheelchair. His limited trips are only to do his medical appointments via public transport. The public transportation most of the time arrives late causing multiple cancellations on his appointments. These multiple cancellations delay the necessary monitoring of his disease and treatments. At this moment Adrian is in the care of a large neuromuscular team and other specialists to monitor and treat the progression of his disease and how it can best be treated along the way. He needs a lot of X-Rays, labs testing for life to have all necessary medication treatments and therapies. In order to be able to improve the quantity and quality of life of Adrian he is in an urgent need to have a vehicle with wheelchair accessibility. His family will love him to have the opportunity to live longer, stronger, happier and a productive life. Adrian would love to be able to go out with his family, go to church, share activities with friends, and happily go out shopping with his mom for his own clothes. He would like to go out to the park and see the birds and enjoy nature. Unfortunately, his family doesn’t have the financial resources to buy a vehicle with this accommodation due to their higher cost. But only with your kindness and generosity his dream can become a reality and he can have a vehicle that can accommodate his motorized wheelchair.
