Family and friends of Marella(Mel) Van Gulick are raising money for the nonprofit Help Hope Live to fund uninsured medical expenses associated with her transplantation. Contributors can be sure donations will be used to pay or reimburse medical related expenses.
Mel has Polycystic Kidney disease which causes clusters of cysts to develop on her kidneys making her current kidney function between 15 and 17%. There are 5 stages in this hereditary disease and she is at stage 4 teetering on stage 5. Once her kidney function drops below 15% she will need to start dialysis treatments.
As we continue to search for a living donor for Mel we ask those of you that are not comfortable or not able to donate a kidney to please consider a financial donation in preparation for the many lifetime expenses associated with her kidney transplant.
Once Mel has received a kidney donation she will need to temporarily relocate to Portland to be near the transplant center during recovery, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging. There will also be many follow up appointments driving to Portland. Although insurance covers a portion of her medical expenses there is still a large portion of expenses uncovered such as the anti-rejection medications she will have to take for the rest of her life which are very expensive and are just as necessary to her survival as the transplant itself.

Mom got her transplant surgery on Thursday 09/05! Today she got discharged and is settling in at the rental!! We are forever grateful to everyone who has helped us get here, sent kind words, or kept us in your prayers.
Keep reading for those of you who want to know the whirlwind of her 5-day hospital stay.
Her surgery ended up being a lot later than anticipated due to having to wait for the kidney to arrive from New York. While waiting in preop we heard a cart roll by and a nurse ran in to let us know the kidney just strolled by us, which was such a relief!
The doctor had looked over the kidney and said it was in perfect condition however they found a hair on the tray so the team had to sterilize everything again to ensure no possible infection source. I think we could have lived with the longer wait and not knowing that. We all certainly stopped breathing when he said there was an issue!! The surgery went smoothly and the kidney started working right away!
She was very groggy from all the medications for the next few days and one of her IVs infiltrated and sent medication into her skin instead of her vein. Her arm swelled up and she had an allergic reaction, it thankfully went away the next day. This medication suppressed her immune system so she felt like she was getting a cold. Her immune system needed to be suppressed for a few days to help prevent her body from rejecting the new kidney.
She had to stay a few days longer than anticipated because she couldn't walk much at first because of her pain levels.
Throughout the last few days, I have watched her grow stronger, have less brain fog, and accept the opportunity to be able to have her life back with a new normal of course. She kept saying it's so strange but I feel this kidney was meant for me. Although, it was upsetting not receiving the first kidney transplant we are so grateful she got the chance to wait for her perfect one.
All the staff at Maine Medical Center did an amazing job caring for her and the transplant team is truly incredible. We can not thank them enough!
We have some exciting news to share!! Marella will be receiving her kidney transplant the first week of July! She must stay in Portland for about four weeks to be close to the hospital. The rental in Portland is just under $6,000, all the funds raised have made it possible for her and John to be able to afford the rental and we are so incredibly thankful!!
On 4/16/24, Mel's husband John donated his right kidney, and she got to watch it get taken away to be flown to California to save a life! Through the shared donor program, she is one step closer to receiving her very own kidney transplant. John is very sore but recovering well; they arrived home today! While cooped up for a week, John was "on vacation," taking naps and watching the news. If you know anything about John, you know that taking a lazy day isn't in his nature, so of course, he was doing laps around the air b and b. We kept him in good spirits, but every belly laugh didn't come without its consequences. We are so very grateful for all the support that we have received and continue to receive.
John got his finalized surgery date and will be donating his kidney in late April. Mel has been meeting with her transplant team to get her ready for her surgery. Last week she was told her kidneys are currently measuring 4 times the normal size. They plan to take out the cyst-filled kidneys about 1 year after having her transplant so she will still have a lot of the painful symptoms even after her transplant but we are hopeful this will still be a big step forward for her.
9/08/23 is a day I will remember for the rest of my life. My mom and her husband John video chatted me and as soon as I saw her face I knew what she was going to say. All the tests and long drives to Portland would soon be worth the hassle. As my mom was bawling she just barely got the words out that "John was approved to be a donor". The complete sense of gratefulness that consumed us was such an overwhelming feeling. Although, John can not donate directly to my mom he will be saving another persons life so someone can save hers in return. John will be donating his kidney in April and my mom is on the track to receive her life saving surgery in July. We have been so blessed!
